Drop questions

Ive installed D2 recently after a few years break. As I never got into the mechanics of the game, I have a few questions. As I understand mlvl has to be equal or superior to qlvl of an item so drop can happen, right?
Also, does sockets in a weapon increase its qlvl?

Re: Drop questions

First question: correct. The mlvl of a monster has to be equal or higher than the qlvl of an item for that item to drop. There is more to it though, since the monster also has to be able to drop items from the TC the item belongs to.

Second question: incorrect. Sockets do not increase qlvl, instead an item must have a sufficient qlvl to have a given number of sockets.

There's a bit ambiguity about the term qlvl. Your statement is just correct with respect to the qlvl which is used for uniques and set items. There's also the base qlvl, a completely different thing. For armors and weapons, it decides about the treasure class which it belongs to (high TCs need a high monster level, but it's not a 1:1 relation) and it also plays a role when calculating which item abilities are possible on a magical or rare item.
