[Draft] Distance Over Time, A Speedrunner's Thread

As noted in the title, this is only a draft. Definitely looking for opinions on if people wanted more categories for leaderboards, more options for player settings, or anything else you wanted to add or had an issue with.

Resources:
Disclaimer: I had nothing to do with these links and their information, I'm simply providing them for the forum to use. All credit to the authors for the great information.
Official World Leaderboards for Diablo 2 Speedrunning (IIRC all of these have videos for your researching purposes )
Teo's Guide to Maps
Void's Speedrun Compendium
OBS (Free Recording Software)
Livesplit (Speedrun Timer)
DiabloInterface (Speedrun Stats and more)

Rules:
These follow basically the same structure as the runs for speedrun.com minus the video requirement.
-Save and Exit is allowed
-All runs on P1
-Timer starts on character creation and ends when Baal dies on specified difficulty
-Vanilla D2 only (no RWM/extended stash etc)
-Untwinked only
-Must not use a pregenerated map
-Pausing your run is allowed, stopping your timer is not
-Video of your run will not be required to establish/overtake ranks (As I understand it, this forum operates on a foundation of trust so we'll keep it that way. If you wish to add your video feel free to link it with your rank!)
-SC or HC must be decided before character creation. A single run can’t count as both categories.
-For Hell runs, the Normal portion can count for both categories.

Interesting. I've been watching mrLlama on YT recently and speed running is another aspect of this great game of ours. So what does any% mean?

@DaveW any% is referencing finishing the game in any capacity for the specified difficulty (any % of other quests completed so long as Baal dies, ending at his death). For example, you might want to do The Golden Bird in Act 3 for a HC speedrun but you might skip it for SC, either way it is not required.

Wow, I didn't know about that site (speedrun.com) - interesting.

You are allowed to take breaks and stop the timer in the meantime, right???

I was going to say: "Hah, nightfish did this in 3h 20min (HC Hell)!" But then I realised, he did it twinked:rolleyes: (still very impressive feat by nightfish though...)

@Grisu i don’t think that’s allowed for official speedruns (extended use of the pause screen). Up for debate here.

Just to clarify a few things for those that are new:
Each character and mode has its own category. With 4 modes and 7 characters, there are 28 official categories, so there is a point in playing something beyond a sorceress. Within each of the 4 tables we can separate the times by class as well.

SC or HC must be decided on character creation. A SC character that never died cannot be submitted as HC. A faster HC run cannot be submitted to its equivalent SC leaderboard.

From what I've seen so far in the speedrun community, the normal segment of a Hell run can be submitted as a normal run. Nobody really does it since the extra preparation needed in the normal segment of a Hell run makes it less efficient than a straight up normal run.

@Yng - Under resources, maybe add a timer program such as LiveSplit? There's also that D2 Interface app a few of the top runners use to automatically do splits for them. It only reads D2 memory to display information, so it should be fine for SPF as it's not a game mod.

The official runs are Vanilla SP, so no RWM, GoMule, etc. (Could be a topic for debate)

@Grisu i don’t think that’s allowed for official speedruns (extended use of the pause screen). Up for debate here.
Officially, pause screen is allowed for any length of time, as long as the timer is still running and the single segment aspect is still going. Verification is done via the submitted video length anyways.

@NanoMist thanks! I indeed intend to add more details to explain everything better and add links for splits, just short on time so I pushed out the draft to get feedback.

I'd love to see a speed run of an older patch w/o purchaseable mana potions, lol. Regardless, Sorc would probably still be the fastest because of static.

Added more clarification with rules and links for LiveSplit/DiabloInterface as suggested @NanoMist. Thanks again.

Will further expand on tables to have each class ranked separately when I have time.

E: I may even have time to try a HC any% Baal tonight..or should I spam Nihlathak until my eyes hurt? Decisions..

I guess this is as good a way as any to start another 99er. ;) Very little time at the moment but this will be interesting to follow and have a go at in the future!

Good to see this here! I've been following D2 speedrunning for a long time now, though never seriously got into it myself as I just spent too much time playing it casually. :D

It's hard starting other patches, since there's nobody competing or thinking with you. I think it would get old rather quickly, being the sole person to speedrun a specific patch. :p
But I do agree, many patches are probably a lot of fun in their own way wrt speedrunning, because different bugs exist, different skills/characters are powerful, and of course the different mechanics like the inability to buy mana potions or re-speccing. I'm mostly curious what patch would actually be the fastest for each category. Perhaps my curiosity will one day get the better of me :p
Classic vs LOD Diablo splits would also be interesting to see!

Well, the no pause/break really makes this a no go for me. I Simply never have time to play more than 1 hour non-stop, work and kids and all... Not to mention that 14+ hrs of Barb speed runs for hell are beyond most people's everyday life time management,I suppose...

Updated to have tables for each class.
I've been practicing some Any% HC Assassin and Sorceress so hopefully I'll have a decent time to post for each soon.

1.07 category would be crazy because of the rejuv shop exploit...
I'd like to see how risky people play with those readily available.

I'm a big fan of speedrunning in general. Back on February 1 2015, before llama and theo were big (I think they might not even have started out yet, I started watching them both in late 2015 I think) and Void was the only one really running on twitch afaik, I got a 2:00:24 SC Assassin time on my second day of running and on my second completed run. That turned out to be the last run I ever completed, too, but it would still be good for ~top25 now 3+ years later, which I think is pretty solid considering how little time I spent getting it.

I invite anyone to beat it, shouldn't be too hard with some patience!

@Fabian that’s a solid run for sure and HC sub 2 hour Assassin is a goal of mine, actually. ;)

E: also added that run of yours to the table since all I have so far is “example” so people have a layout for the code. Congrats on being the first person on the list, don’t suppose you remember what level you were at the end?

i actually discussed it shortly with a bunch of speedrunners (and viewers) on twitch. the runners were more enthused about using the exploit for mana potions than for rejuvenation potions :D (do potions in 1.07 give the same values as in 1.14?)

i do wonder what else could be exploited, and what would make the run harder.
- ancients can be completed at any level (iirc), that would probably change things.
- the ability to glitch-wield two weapons could turn out interesting. assuming 20fcr wands can be shopped, you can just get two of those, for example.
- "bramble" torso runeword (EthRal iirc) in 1.07 gives 10 movement speed, 33 light res and 33 fire res.
- frw doesn't have the diminishing-return formula yet (iirc).
- no re-spec and no synergies, so hell runs would probably be a total drag for most classes.
- static field isn't yet capped on nightmare/hell, so that could carry a sorc quite well.
- Magic Resist is vastly overpowered (and partially bugged) and could easily cause time losses during Hell runs.
- lower resist lowers magic resistance, so a bone necromancer might work? LR also works at full effectiveness against immunes (rather than at 1/5), so assuming those baal wave 2 mummies are MI in 1.07, that would work out well. (leveling to bone spear will probably be very tedious, however.)
- amazons are probably terrible. barbarians are probably bad.
- assassin is probably OK. druid is probably doable?
- paladin would probably just be hammerdin (magic damage like in 1.14). maggot lair will be nasty, but otherwise there should be no issues. lower resist charges can potentially be shopped to deal with baal wave 2 mummies. he may actually have the easiest/most reliable run.
- just like in 1.14, teleport charges can potentially be shopped, but i don't know if that would fit into a run, time-wise or cash-wise.
- small durance of hate levels on all difficulties. yay!

besides what skills would be viable at all, i really wonder how skills would be distributed. the lack of re-specs is probably the biggest game-changer. (mana might've been the biggest issue if it wasn't for the buyback bug.)

Edit: @Yng any rules on patch version? :)

@Fruit I pretty much just copied the official speedrun rules and used them as a template for us to start, most everything is up for discussion and can be changed if the forum prefers it a certain way. I don’t personally see a problem with previous patches but we’ll definitely have to keep them separate from the 1.13+ runs.

As soon as someone has times to post for pre patch runs I’ll add more tables (or as soon as I can :)).
