Raffy: "Errr...ummm....*tries not to laugh*...what do you click on to get on the Internet?"
End-user: "An icon on the desktop."
Raffy: "Good. What does the icon say?"
End-user: "Internet"
Raffy: "Is it Internet Explorer?"
End-user: "Yes, I'm on the Internet."
Raffy: "I'm checking the browser..."
End-user: "I don't know. How do you do that?"
Raffy: "Can you get on the HELP tab on the Menu on top of the screen?"
End-user: "What menu?"
Raffy: "If you look on top of the screen to right, you'll see HELP"
End-user: "Ok I see it."
Raffy: "Click on it."
End-user: "You mean click on it?"
Raffy: "Yes, CLICK ON IT" *trying not to get pissed."
End-user: "Okay something came up."
Raffy: "Click on About"
End-user: "Click on it?"
Raffy: "Please click on it."
End-user: "Okay clicked on it."
Raffy: "What does it say?"
End-user: Internet Explorer 7.
Raffy: "Okay, that's your browser."
End-user: "Uhuh. That's the browser. Cool. Didn't know that. Can you try to solve my problem now."

I feel your pain raffster. I run into one of those every other day myself. It always brings to mind one question. Why do you need the internet if you can't even use a computer?

At least they're not as bad as Mr. "Its broke! Fix it!". Or worse, when they want to troubleshoot it with you, but flat out won't do what you tell them until you've told them twelve times to do it.

Yeah, I run regular reports for some not especially computer literate people, although I don't get anything quite that bad. Thank god I'm not in IT.

Well, I'm sorry, but we're not all computer pros. Some people are into gardening and those gardeners don't insinuate YOU guys are all morons for not being garden experts.

It's still funny. A lot of jokes are about situations involving a lack of knowledge. Oliver wouldn't slip on the banana peel which Stan dropped if he had seen it.

However, explaining jokes doesn't make them more funny.

I deliberately chose a mildy funny example, but I'm sure people laughed their asses off about it in the 20s and 30s. Today we have dozens of TV channels broadcasting 24/7 programs, so we are through with that kind of jokes at the age of 8 or so.

Computer usage is almost ubiquitous in the US. Most non-physical labor jobs, and even those that are, use computers in some way, shape, or form. It's almost unbelievable that after 20+ years in the public domain, someone hasn't educated himself as to the workings of a computer. And "click" is a common enough term that if you are using a computer at all, you should know what it means.

Plus, when something says INTERNET EXPLORER, wouldn't even a non-techie connect that with the internet?

Gardening is a hobby no longer practiced by most of the US, if only because we don't have gardens. It's not crucial. These two should not be compared. Plus, how many ways are there to say "Put plant in dirt and water. Take out things that you don't want sometimes. Maybe add other stuff."

You don't need to know police protocols to say "I am being robbed." It's a common definition. You don't need an MD to say "My stomach hurts." That said, if people knew more useful terminology, going to a doctor would be easier. Stomach is not useful. Lower right quadrant is. Hurt is not useful. Sharp, stabbing pain is.
