Does language control thought?

I had a crossfire debate in class on this topic yesterday and wasn't satisfied with the results. Since you are all such great thinkers, this thread might turn out to be very interesting.

I dont think we will ever know.
Reminds of that color debate we had, if everyone's 'blue' for example is the same thing.

It isn't :) My dad is colourblind and can't tell the difference between certain types of blue and green for example
I'd like to hear some counterarguments, this sounds like it can get intresting !

The argument was about the possibilty that what I see as blue, might be your green for example, but we both call it the same thing, not knowing the color we see it in is different. And how we have no way of finding out if that's the case or not.

In my opinion, it's the same with the original question here.

Hell no, I have thoughts all the time that are completely unexplainable with language.

Actually I find the notion rediculous.

I'm colorblind too. I know it doesn't make sense, but you can tell the difference between colors when they are apart, but when they are side by side I can't tell the difference or see a line.

Time is something we know about. The planets is something we know about. Anyone can make up a stupid story, by changing the way a horse or somthing looks.

But My original point is we won't know not that what you said was wrong. We won't know because we will describe it using only words in our vocabulary/dictionary.

I painted a house for a color blind guy once.

he had a blue house and he decided to repaint it himself and he went out and bought a Turquoise paint and painted half of one side on the house before his wife noticed the difference and made him hire a real painter for the job.

i would say no since sometimes you feel things that "you can't put into words".

some would say this about love, extreme pain or watching Thunderball for the first time in 5 months.

you're right, Tom Jones does sort of transcend language with his pure awesomeness, but, I think language does limit us, or rather, language portrays the priorities of a culture

Don't forget the frustration of having to deal with you on a daily basis. I'm sure Freet can attest to the fact that there are no words to express it.

Is seeing believing, or is believing seeing? :p

Language is an abstract term. I do thinking in words, words are a part of language, therefore language controls my though. But at the same time I can have feelings that are hard to express in words, so that thought is free of language. The answer to these questions is always somewhere in the middle. That's why reading essays about them are boring.
