I use the program AutoHotKey to change the functions of various keys.

In your case, if you take the time to briefly figure out the program, the simple script that you would want to implement is:
    LWin::return

Pry off the plastic bit with a screwdriver and break off the sticky-up part that makes it press on the pad?

You mean when inside a program? Edit the shortcut properties, and uncheck all the Windows hotkeys. I think there's one for the Windows button.

I usually go with the flat head screwdriver method. Gives the keyboard character.

A spilled cup of liquid works too. If you wan't to douse the whole keyboard.

Is that something unique to Australian Windows (tm)?

Or did you just make it up? :p

I advocate the stuff i mentioned... first for not physically harming the computer and second for having other uses. I set up ctrl + alt + space to run the shortcut that minimizes/maximizes everything. Very useful for getting straight to the desktop.

He's talking about the Windows button on the keyboard, that brings up the Start Menu in most cases.

Oh you're not harming the computer.. Just the keyboard. I actually use the windows key a lot, but it did use to be really annoying. Sides, keyboards are like $5 new.

I hate it when I'm playing full screen games and I miss and hit the Windows key instead of Alt or Ctrl. THat pisses me off, especially if I die while I'm trying to switch back.

It should be in the properties window, in one of the tabs. Maybe it's just a Win98 thing.

I'm presuming he's talking the keyboard built into the laptop...

I use my laptop's keyboard and a bluetooth mouse, good enough for me mostly. The one thing i miss is the numpad. I also use that program to run a script to remap some of the keys to numbers (so I can enter the numbers 1 handed, instead of holding down the Fn key that's common on laptops). It's not worth it for me to buy one of those USB numpads or full size keyboards.

Edit: concerning your using win 98... I have no idea :)

I actually didn't have a windows key until i got this laptop a month ago... I'll definitely take a look at the desktop at home (which i can boot into 98) when I visit home tomorrow (I'm curious to a fault it would seem)

    oh. uh. Laptop. Right.
I forgot they even existed. when ppl mention computers, i seem to always envision bulky desktop setups. You could still pry off the plastic top though. Just keep it somewhere safe, in case you need to stick it back on for resale later.

Nubcake. I use shift, ctrl, and alt nonstop in games (read: WoW), and I have yet to hit my magical Windows button yet.

I took mine off, tied a noose around it and terminated it with extreme prejudice.
