Do you care about honor and fair play in public duels?

Toader and I had a long chat over MSN IM this morning and I felt that we didn't have the same perspective on public dueling. Toader believes that one should maintain fair play while dueling even in public duel games while I think that it's perfectly OK to play dirty in public duel games.

What do you guys think or better yet, what kind of "code" do you practice when you are in public duels? And why or why not?

I would vote, but since the patch came out, I no longer duel in any games. I play only PvM these days...

I never do public duels ("so why the hell do I answer to this thread?" is a good argument against me, yup!).
If I would, though, I would adapt to the opponents. I rather play fair, so I would begin that way. But if noone else would, then why the hell should I?
Isn't the point with public duels that they are a massive chaotic killing place? (Well, that's why I avoid them). Team duels, where strategy and cooperation are more important then leet gear is more fun in my opinion.
I'm not saying "Dont duel public" though. Everyone has the right to play their way.

I agree.... i play honourably and fairly. I do not steal cash unless they steal mine, sometimes they steal my cash and i still don't even steal cash. I hate the town guarders who NK, thats what i get ugly and fair dueling dissapears down the drain pipe!

Also in dueling i stick up for the little guy, like for an example... i was int his one game where there was my hammerdin, boned necro, trap Asn, bliz sorce and 2 barbs, one was ww the other frenzy. The 2 barbs were having fun naked dueling and using flamebellow's inferno on each other, the necro and i was dueling (quite a fair duel). I kept on switching from charge with botd to hammers with hoto. Then asn was quiet and the sorce that i noticed then and there was low lvl and she enjoyed watching. Then suddenly asn asked me to join party, so thus i did. At first nothign happens then suddenly she layed traps around town and i was wondering who she was trying to kill we are all outside except for sorce but she was not into the dueling part. Then the sorce steped out and died..... and asn did not quit. She kept on nking the sorce over and over and over again!! And i felt sorry for the sorce cause they were not doing anything wrong but watching and having fun. They got up set and i told them not to worry asn was just being a pain

So err i put on some lightning absorb gear... tgods and black horn face, and went hostile to asn. Went out, traps did not do a damn thing then i killed asn with hammers. The called me a noob a few million times but sorce praised me and kept on saying she did not do anything wrong. And i told them i know thats why i killed asn cause they are just a bully and i kept on nking her and saying how does that feel to be bullied. Then Asn when plz do not NK no NK no Nk etc etc etc... on and on! I said well then don't pic on people lesser then u and pick on someone ur own size. All other chars watched and laughed, and asn picked up body then left.

Then we had a ffa necro won in the end sorce was still there watching then another asn came in different account and char but same sort of build. And again it started again they started to pick on the sorce for no reason.... and the sorce and i was like WTF is there a world wide conspiricy or something where ALL asns hate sorces. Thus i don't the exact same thign before.... these asns only turned hostile to the sorce and no other chars who were willing to duel in the game... weird ha?!?!

Now heres a question would anyone have done the same thing i did, or totally different in this situation? I am just curious of what people thought of people who bully the weaker chars in duelz and if they had a strong char would they stand up for the little people?

Sorry for the long story just trying to prove that i can be fair and generious where is due, and turn evil and corrupted when i am provoked, well not personally but when i see 'bullies' like that who had no reason to do what they did. I have many other times but thats was the most recent one!

Well and old saying in the army was "kill 'em all let GOD sort 'em out" but I prefer to have some honor unless someone is whining, bashing, or bing rude (name calling), then I just kill them till they leave or I get bored.

To the honorable duelers, do you think that hit and run by poison users is a lame, dishonorable dueling method? E.g. a BOTD barb with 5K poison hitting hard and running away and then coming back when you have one life left...???

Note....I voted for option #2.

I think clan honor rules are way to strict and I dont even follow them in private duels.


The things I dont/wont do in any public or private game: full absorb (unless provoked by a NKer), psn 'hit-n-run' tactics, use a bow with someone other than a zon for the purpose of casting a curse, use slow, use excessive minions for mere anti-targeting purposes (note: the only case where minions are ok is the minion-mancer), bone prison a melee player. Thats all I can think of right now...im sure there are some other cheap tactics I wont employ either.

Also, I dont think "running away" is cheap in duels...when I duel, the entire Blood Moor is fair game. Alot of people cry about you running or not "standing still so they can hit you"...I think this is stupid, movement is a main part of strategy.

I use these rules, dont fight cheap, and I still win a majority of the time in publics. The people that can beat me generally dont use these tactics either, they are usually "out-n-out" good duelers. Ive been on the PvP scene for quite some time, its gonna take more than cheap tactics to beat me consistently. From what Ive found, people who use the cheap tactics are the ones that are using it to cover a weakness somewhere else, or lack of experience and skill...so they end up dying anyways. The good 10% of people that can beat me are acutally good duelers, generally fight pretty fair and are just more experienced than me or something.

Well, I chose Yes, I play fair but will adjust my tactics a little bit to turn the tide to my favor (wear 2 ravens, instead of one for example when dueling a cold sorc)

However, it's not really the right wording for the way I Play, I won't ajust my tactics to turn the tide in my favor simply to win. Let me explain:

If I'm playing in a pubbie, I Wear my normal, fairly good PvP gear. No Masive resistance, maxed yes, 75% but no massive stacking/absorb. I will play this way against sorces, FoH'ers and anyone else, and I will try to win simply by trying to be cunning and skillful. However, if a sorc kills me then guards my body, or I see her naked killing everyone else in the game, or if a trapper kills me then surrounds my body with traps, then you better believe that I'm gonna stack the resistance to the element that they are using, and put on as much absorb as I can.

I don't just do it .. I usually ask if they can let me get my body, if they refuse etc. I usually say something along the lines of "ok, look, your a cold sorc, and I've been playing fair, please let me get my body, if not, I'll just stack resistances and absorbs and just let you heal me."

If they're totally bad mannered, I stack res/absorb, down rej. potions. and do anything I can to kill them. I've found having a 3 x 4 socket monarch's in my stash to be invaluable, one with p topaz's one with p rubies, one with p sapphire's, or course a Guardian angel, and 2 of each of the absorb rings (raven,dwarf & wisp). T-Gods & Snowclash are great, infernostride boots, Nokazan amulet etc. etc. etc.

People that are really, really bad mannered deserve to be taught a lesson, it won't actually teach them a lesson, in fact it probably just makes them even more bad mannered, but it does give me some satisfaction to know that the sorc that's blizzard killing everyone could heal me with a few small equiptment changes.

I will fight fair, so long as the other person does the same. Suprisingly, quite a few pubby duelers that I have seen do the same, but then there's always those few that only comes out of town to try and NK, begin insulting others, and whatever else they can try to do to annoy.
When it comes to people like that I really don't care, I killed someone who was trying to NK people. She would wait in town, when someone would run out, she would too, fire off a few arrows and run back in. When she went to go get her body afterwards, I did it again, and again, and again till she quit. She had tried to NK a paladin more than once, so in my view, I wasn't doing anything wrong towards her.

only ppl who i dont fight fair against are people who nk/absorb, however, i do give them ample warning that if they continue their action, i will kill them take their gold, and nk them untill they leave the game. almost no one takes me seriously when i tell them that, they usually respond by callling me a noob, then when they die and i nk them they just spam "NeWb Nk" to fill up my screen

I'm going to post and then read the thread. I voted for "I will do everything and anything to win". When I say this, I don't mean hacking the program--no I am above that, but otherwise, if it's in the game, if hexes start reappearing, then sure, I'll want the hexes. Unless blizzard starts banning people who have hexes I'm going to want them.

I'd like to draw an analogy. Chess. I love chess. But you know what, if someone makes a mouse slip, that's part of the game. They shouldn't be moving so fast. I've made mouse slips before, it sucks, but it only happens rarely so get over it. Sometimes there will be times where the position objectively is drawn and there's only so many moves that can be made before triple repetition happens but if I have 20 seconds and you have 15, I'm going to win by trying to avoid triple repetition by my time advantage. I've been on the other side of the fense of this and I don't like it when it happens to me either, but the fact is, as long as you are nice afterwards, I think you should do whatever you can to obtain your objective. ~psy

edit: One thing i should mention is that I'm always owned when I try dueling for some reason so I don't do it very much

I'm all for fair play, but I find the uglyness really comes through in LLD games. In general, I'll play fair, but if someone crosses that line, well, their funeral :creep:.

It's like that MechWarrior slogan:
