Diablo 3 Patch 2.4.1 New Virtual Pets

Earlier this week we posted a bunch of infos and pics of new cosmetic items and wings players have found in Patch 2.4.1 on the PTR. Fan reaction has been mixed, with some liking the new visuals and others angrily stomping their pitchforks and rabblerabbling about how Diablo 2 had no transmog and dagnabit they liked it that way. Personally I've got a foot in each camp, and the more time I spend in MP games with players wearing glowing wings, the more I remember that I prefer to play solo.

That said, I was a huge fan of the gold pickup pets we had early in the D3v beta, and I think the gold pickup feature added to virtual pets in Patch 2.4.0 is one of the best Quality of Life additions since the game launched. So while I don't care much about new transmogs and think the wings are mostly annoying, I can't be so negative about the twenty new heel-trotters, not all of which have yet been found. Credit again to Lumamaster's thread on the PTR forum where he's been compiling and updating the new transmogs, pets, wings, and other cosmetic treats coming in the next patch. There's a lot more there than I quoted here, so check it out. Plus a Blue stopped by today test the waters and give out a disclaimer:

It's great to see all this excitement over these new items. We're very interested in hearing your feedback!

Just want to poke my head in here and add in as a reminder that, as always, PTR is subject to change. We're testing out a few things, including types of cosmetics and how they can be acquired. Some of these items may go live, and some of them might not, and we may change how or where you find some of them. We appreciate those of you who are taking the time to track these things down and give them a try![source]http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/20742695169?page=4#68[/source]

What do you guys think of the new stuffs? Anyone want to Grinch about the virtual pets? Click through for a full list of them, many of which have not yet been spotted or cataloged.

Most of these virtual pets have been found via drops from the new Treasure Goblin, the Menagerist Goblin. The new transmogs and wings are *not* dropped by goblins, not even the green Odious Collector. They all come from one specific unique enemy, such as Maghda, Uber Maghda, a Flying demon, etc. Details in the OP thread.

I don't really like these things. The glowy wings etc in particular I find pretty obnoxious. ... But I can also play by myself. I mostly do anyways, really.

Personal preference: Add an option to toggle on/off the visuals for the "extra" effects of all players, including pets/wings. That way if you want them they show up on your screen. If you hate them you don't have to deal with them. Seems like a pretty easy toggle (although maybe not one you'd want to implement in a pay-to-support game, as not seeing people's "perks" reduces the incentive to buy them a bit....)

Oh look, they are actually trying to... monetize the game so that... They can keep developing... What a crazy idea, eh? Wouldn't want them to do that...

1) Is (significant) continued development really necessary for a game like this?

I realize we're not living in the 90's anymore, but people played D2 for like, a decade. With most of the continuing support coming from a single paid expansion, and then some easy to implement events (ubers, etc).

A fancy MMO that is not. Not at all. But it was something that kept a ton of people active for a very long period of time. The variety of builds made for a ton of replayability, even if new content was lacking.

2) Maybe significant continued development is needed nowadays though. If that's the case, what makes a free-to-play model more effective (for us? for developers? for any other parties?) than a "buy this expansion" model? I'm not convinced the "buy this expansion" model can't work, even in 2016, but would be interested to hear other thoughts.

To me, expansions seem to offer more reliable amounts of income for the developers, and they can bank on receiving the bulk of that income at a certain time. For buyers, the attraction is getting a clear "buy this, get that" transaction where you don't feel "obligated" to get any extras, and have no worries about being nickle-and-dimed.

What makes either free-to-play or expansion-based development better than a subscription model, for that matter? If the argument for free-to-play games is that constant donations feed constant development, surely subscription models provide the most reliable form of all when it comes to generating income for the company, which lets them budget and plan development more effectively?

My impression is that subscriptions would be poor for D3 type games because the amount of new content development required to justify that sort of ongoing payment really isn't part of the game model. That's for a much more in-depth game I'd think. But the expansion model still seems to be a very solid choice for generating revenue and new content.

I'm pretty fine with transmogs and wings and pets or whatever else, though I get far more pleasure out of watching people stamp around and whine over them than I ever would in-game. Main value of the site these days, actually.
