defence doesn't reduce damage, it decreases the chance for you to be hit... and yes, it's mostly for physical attacks. if a monster has higher defense, you need higher attack rating to get the same chance to hit him

there's two item properties that grant:

reduces physical damage by X%
or: reduces physical damage by X

that is what would be physical resists in your case (also, monsters in NM and Hell have more physical resist than in Normal)

why are people sooooo obsessed with getting THE best perfect, eth gear for a tiny bit higher defence. i dont see the point in spending 5x more on a perfect item when u can get a low one for alot cheaper.

Because they can, it's that simple. Unless your build depends on high defense there isn't much point to paying more for +30 defense on an item. Most builds don't care what defense the character has, so ergo most people shouldn't be worried about defense. It's purely an ego or perfectionist thing, to show that their character is as good as it can possibly get.

That's pretty true in my case. I always set my SP char to running mode all the time, so I have basically only 5% of avoiding the attacks, yet I still look for only those perfect max defence armor to cube. Pointless, yet...my perfectionist ego 'says go for it' :crazy:

- Well honestly, it is pointless to change boots with a 50 more def pair. Although if you change that boots, then helm, armor, etc. you can easily get on extra 500; say from 2000 to 2500 what is technically 25% more.
- I know from my experiences; 2500 def with Defiance merc will become 6000-8000 (depending on his lvl) in no time, that paired with a solid clvl (~90+) is a fair summ of not beeing hit, and yet easily stackable by caster.

- A well spread mistake is that ppl usually think if they don't have atleast 25,000 def then they will completely ignore it...

10k defense is the normally considered line between when defense matters and when it doesn't. Get above that point and you'll notice a difference, below it and the difference is slight.
