Re: Decent File Shredder?
You don't have to be doing anything wrong to be nailed to the wall just for what you have in your possession. An example I've heard is to imagine if the police came to your door with a search warrant today and the contents of your home were released to the press. They could then print an article with a section like this:
".....Among the items found in his home were two bibles, a cross, three assault rifles, boxes of ammunition, and survival gear. Telephone records show he made several long distance calls to the middle east."
Obviously you're a right wing religious nut who was planning some kind of killing spree. Never mind that the bibles weren't yours, the cross was typical of many christian homes, the rifles were bolt action hunting rifles, you only had two boxes of ammo, the survival gear was a tent and sleeping bag, and you were calling your brother who is serving in the U.S. army.
Point is, even if what you have right now or have tried to get rid of is totally innocent, it can still get you in real trouble when put in a different context. I have no doubt that ALL of you have something on your computers that you'd rather other people not find, and I'm not just talking about your porn. :evil2:
It doesn't have to be the police looking either. Lets say you sold your old computer. Or maybe it was stolen. Anyone who buys it who has just a fraction of skill could recover all those bank statements and whatnot you deleted. Or maybe something is wrong with it and in the course of recovering information, the person working on it stumbles across those secret love letters you deleted. Imagine if after that, he showed them to your wife to ask if they need recovered and the letters weren't to or from her.
Its perfectly ok to be just a little paranoid. (Cautious, but not "Their out to get me!") As long as you don't go overboard and have it rigged to explode or something if someone enters the wrong password, you have nothing to be ashamed of in taking precautions. :coffee:
