Decent File Shredder?

Decent File Shredder?

Hey,

Quick question - does anyone here have any suggestions for a decent, free, file shredder - to scramble the 'deleted' files after the windows recycle bin does it's thing.

Thank you in advance.

Why do you want to go to the trouble? I've always thought these sorts of things were silly and paranoid - it's already annoying and a lot of work to recover deleted files, assuming they don't get overwritten before you get a chance.

Anyway, try Eraser

everyone should have a file shredder, so cops can't find the files that u recycle bin 'ed, if they ever get a search warrant for your computer....

Then you would probably need to be more worried about the files you still have on the computer.

You can borrow my dog for a while; he will shred any paper you give him.

Oh...for a computer. If you have any files that can be incriminating I think you have other things to worry about.

Why are people so dedicated to this? It's a little late to start deleting your child porn when the police is breaking down your door.

The funny part is, if you start one of them up as they are breaking down the door, you could be charged with attempting to destroy evidence, making it worse for yourself in the end. :D

Exactly.

I mean if people make a habit of storing something illegal. What are the chances that you deleted all of it right before the police come by? More likely you deleted some old games and erased that data and still have the illegal stuff on your hard drive.

In this instance it's to protect some IP.

eh, all that is true.

though if u have commited a crime, it makes sense to try to get away with it. hide/destroy the eveidence etc..

i mean come on, if u murder some one...u shouldn't try to hide the weapon u used ?

it probably won't do any good with either a weapon or a file on the computer, but it's worth a shot...it's not like you have to worry about having something to lose....you're already in trouble anyways....u don't have to worry about being in "more" trouble. ooo, now i have 3 life sentences instead of 1...man....i might have lived 3 times longer than human possible...man...i coulda gotten out after 150 years and enjoyed the rest of my 350 more years of life....lol
------------------------------------------------------------------------
child porn isn't the only illegal stuff. pirating (anything/whatever) is a very wide spread crime. not everyone has child porn. if u have illegal stuff, it does NOT always mean u have child porn.

for instance there was a like 12 year old girl who had like over 10,000 pirated music songs that came out to like over a million dollars (and of all the people to go after, the FBI goes after a 12 year old girl, who because of her age and the sheer amount of money, they don't even charge her with anything in the first place. i think they jsut like to scare 12 year old girls).

Except that the presence of the files is the crime. You must have them for a reason. if you delete them you no longer have them so what was the point?

Your murder example is poor. A better example would be stealing money then burning it to hide the evidence.

alright, i stand corrected. if anyone cares, use johnny's example as it is better than mine.

A life sentence is actually just a long-term sentence; it doesn't actually mean your whole life. If I'm not mistaken I think the average life sentence turns out to be around 40 years. No source for that, I don't remember where I heard it.

Also, I think record companies have given up prosecuting individuals for pirated music, etc. But I suppose if you have enough pirated material they would do something.

ya but the movie industry are gonna take heavy legal action and "lobby" (pressure) the cops/fbi against those who have pirated wolverine: x-men origins. they already peeved at whoever leaked the trailer onto the internet.

i think why the music records have given up, is that they got a replacement source of income. with the deals/contracts they make with the ipods and stuff.

You don't have to be doing anything wrong to be nailed to the wall just for what you have in your possession. An example I've heard is to imagine if the police came to your door with a search warrant today and the contents of your home were released to the press. They could then print an article with a section like this:

".....Among the items found in his home were two bibles, a cross, three assault rifles, boxes of ammunition, and survival gear. Telephone records show he made several long distance calls to the middle east."

Obviously you're a right wing religious nut who was planning some kind of killing spree. Never mind that the bibles weren't yours, the cross was typical of many christian homes, the rifles were bolt action hunting rifles, you only had two boxes of ammo, the survival gear was a tent and sleeping bag, and you were calling your brother who is serving in the U.S. army.

Point is, even if what you have right now or have tried to get rid of is totally innocent, it can still get you in real trouble when put in a different context. I have no doubt that ALL of you have something on your computers that you'd rather other people not find, and I'm not just talking about your porn. :evil2:

It doesn't have to be the police looking either. Lets say you sold your old computer. Or maybe it was stolen. Anyone who buys it who has just a fraction of skill could recover all those bank statements and whatnot you deleted. Or maybe something is wrong with it and in the course of recovering information, the person working on it stumbles across those secret love letters you deleted. Imagine if after that, he showed them to your wife to ask if they need recovered and the letters weren't to or from her.

Its perfectly ok to be just a little paranoid. (Cautious, but not "Their out to get me!") As long as you don't go overboard and have it rigged to explode or something if someone enters the wrong password, you have nothing to be ashamed of in taking precautions. :coffee:

I saw an article a while ago, about a cop giving a talk at a university about dealing with the police if you are not actually under suspicion. His advice was basically "don't say anything at all about what you were doing at the time you witnessed whatever they are asking you about, don't invite them into your house and seriously consider asking for legal counsel if they want to know anything about you".

It seems a lot of people while trying to be helpful in criminal investigations end up confessing to things they did not know were illegal.

The talk is actually on YouTube somewhere. At that same presentation was a defense attorney who also spoke on his view. It's a definite must see for anyone who wants to know what to do if stopped by the cops.

Re: Decent File Shredder?

I've been told much the same thing, though in fewer words. "If an officer starts questioning you, say you want a lawyer and SHUT UP!"

Think back to when you were a kid and got accused of something you didn't do. (This time.) Did anyone believe you when you said you didn't do it? Of course not. Only the guilty try to defend themselves, so obviously you were lying, right? :evil2:

Same thing happens as adults. Trying to defend yourself just makes you look guilty in the cops eyes. So does demanding a lawyer, but the lawyer has a better chance of getting you out of the situation.
