    damn internet hogs!

I was having lunch with a friend today, and we were discussing the recent rate hikes in our area for internet service since one of our two ISP's was bought up by the other.
We got to discussing how they manage to be an ISP!?
What do they do to actually get the internet and then send it out to thier suscribers? Why can't a normal everyday person just connect to the internet on thier own without going through an ISP?

We can't figure it out...what do they do to actually "harness" the internet in order to "deliver" it to customers?
There are thousands of ISP's out there, and since no one actually owns the internet, why can't just an everyday Joe hook up to the internet without the costs of an ISP?
Enlighten me, cuz I can't figure it out...

Yay for unfettered capitalism! A marketplace with no regulation is better because competition means choice for consumers and lower prices!

EXACTLY! ISP's have to connect to the internet somewhere...it's just that they have millions of dollars worth of lightning fast fiber opitc cable that they can ship it through to the masses...

but what about me? I don't need a fiber optic connection...why can't I just skip the ISP (And thus the expensive bills and subsequent rate hikes) and just plug into the internet myself?
    HOW?!! ahhh!

And you would prevent duplicate IP addresses, how?

The ISP's don't have the lightning fast fiber optic cable. The back bone providers do. The ISP's pay to tie into them.

I'm sure Ranger14 will be along shortly to explain it to us.

It all has to do with the hardware needed for the internet to exist and be as efficient as it is.

I mean for a megabyte to move from some guys computer in japan to your computer through the internet the megabyte moves through billions of dollars in hardware that was all paid for by someone. Someone with a plan to make money.

And cleaning out all those tubes regularly is a pain, I'm glad that a company does it for me.

so what does it take to just do it yourself? is it really that hard if you're not planning on selling it to other people?

But don't let your ISP fool you by sending you a bill for a wheel re-alignment. The internet is not a big truck.

Would Micky D's sell you one fry?
    or a grain of salt?

Why would the people who sell access to the backbone to ISP's, sell to an individual?

Or a better analogy would be the Ontario Food Terminal. Only wholesellers can buy there. If regular people could buy their produce there it wouldn't workk because they are not set up to handle so many people buying so little.

Don't forget you would need an IP address. You would have to get one from whatever agency handles them.

Lucky you ducked or that one might have hit you in the head rather than flying straight over it.

Ah, the joys of living in a big city. I can hook up to wireless internet almost anywhere in the downtown area or near campus for free. As a matter of fact, they are setting up free wireless internet for and entire 11 square block section of downtown Austin. If you can't afford to buy the internet from the "backbone", then just leech off of someone who's got wireless going.

Right have all your internet activity go through some strangers computer. That couldnt possibly come back to bite you in the butt.

Not to mention hos easy it is for the person to notice it and then to record what you are actualy doing. Which he has every reason to want to do as you are actualy stealing from him.

I would rather to go Thailand without condoms than to have my internet go through a strangers computer.

Well what I'm actually talking about here is companies and such that set up free wireless in order to attract business. The city set up the wireless downton to attract businesses.

Well we've established that Durf is operating the internet, but the question remains; who is he working for? WHO!!??
