Damn Hacks

Damn Hacks

Let me start off with the fact that I have been playing D2 off and on since the day it came out. I have stayed legit throughout it all because I play for fun, not to accumulate the godly elite gear.

Yesterday I am in a trading game trying to pawn off stuff for crafting. 2 different hackers come in and ask me if the stuff I am wearing is for trade. They ask specifically for a ring I have on, not in the trade window. Stunned that they know its name (a rare) they say they have MH and can see my items. WTF? Not only can they see where the monsters are, see what drops clearer than I can, but now they can also see what I am using without my knowledge? The next game I go to, someone asks why I would have wasted an Ist on Silence in a phase blade ( I smite so its great). The guy tells me he can see all my gear.

Am I just out of the loop or is this new? Does any one else feel violated by this hack?

To answer your question - yeah I feel violated and I think it's ******** that people need those kinds of things to play the game efficiently. I've never duped or used programs, it just eliminates the fun and the good feeling you get from knowing that you're a completely legit player.

The next time someone does that to you, just ask them why they paid for a program to see your items when you'd gladly show them any time... Yeah that's right, those programs cost REAL MONEY. I don't know how much it is, but come on...they paid money to cheat at a video game...we're better than that.

One thing that really bothered me was that it takes away your ability to negotiate a trade. If they know exactly what you are not showing they know what you can or can not afford.

One thing that makes me feel a little better is that they are at least a little more likely to get hacked & or banned due to their cheating. The problem is that all the legit players suffer in the meantime.

What does it mean when it was said that players using maphack can see the drops more clearly? Does that mean that they see them before we do? Is the font just bigger and easier to click on? That really ticks me off! That is why i am playing less and less in public games. But it is the best way to level. Damn it blizzard - just make it so nobody can hack the game (is this impossible?), then we wouldn't have this discussion.

Diablo 2 does rock no matter what though...

You can program MH to have various colors for certain items. I know I know, I used mh in 1.09 and I remember charms dropped with purple text making them extremely easy to spot. :hanky:

Yes, many people feel violated by hackers. There are a lot of ways to cheat - some of them are TECHNICALLY legit. I don´t belive it can be ever possible to get rid of cheaters. Arguments like "the game is not funny any longer if you are cheating" or "You can use third party programs playing singel or open realms - it´s legit there" - doesn´t work. Why? - it´s simple:
The very clue of cheating is to pretend to be better (stronger) than others and better than cheater can possibly be playing legit game. Cheating has social input and antisocial output - that´s all

I had the same problems with mh users. After I got my first SoJ drop (yay) I went on a trading spree to get rid of all the lower items I had that were just taking up room. I kept an eye out for small items to replace the bigger ones, so whenever I point out a ring or some such, the trader would say 'you can have it for a soj' and wouldn't trade anything with me if the soj is not in the equation. After several encounters like this, I ended up muling my soj (that I actually use) when I go trading to save myself the headache.

In a word, yes, maphack impairs legit players and puts them at a disadvantage.

Sure I've sometimes followed merrily along when a player seems to know exactly where he's going to find the stairs to the next level. But I've also felt like a rightous idiot sometimes after calling someone in the party out for mh and leaving the game with my quests incomplete. The bottom line though, is that the mh users get their kicks from the very things we complain about. The ability to see the map, see items better, see other chars' items, etc.. It gives them a sense of superiority that they couldn't gain by just playing the game and making godly chars.

Meh, its just as bad cheating in SP. Atleast if you are part of the SPF community here at this site.

Not everyone thinks Single Player is training for Bnet!

Easy there ;) - The only things I meant was that playing single game you:
1. don´t break against any agreement using third party programs
2. don´t expose other users for cosequences of your "experiments" (becouse you play SP and there are no "other users")
I didn´t mean that:
1. Cheating has any meaning in ANY way of playing
2. SP is less worth than BN or that SP has no rules

I have though no objections against experimenting with generated chars and items - but never on line and... I would never consider it as playing the game. :)

People will always cheat, I just dont deal with them. I usually setup my trades offline, and dont have to worry about MH.

My favortie part is that many that DL the cracks dont know crap about what they are doing and end up posting things like "My little brother" or "My friend" dowloaded X program and opened up a backdoor or screwed something else up. Love it every time!
