Damage taken goes to mana

I know mercs don't use mana, but I was wondering what would happen if I gave my merc a item that has this attribute.

Nothing.

Damage To Mana (DTM) does not reduce the amount of damage received in any way. All it does is increase your mana pool based upon the damage you received.

... and as mercs don't have mana, the energy will be used to heat the swimming pool of Blizzard's server farm. Winter is near, so they will be grateful for each point of mana !
