D3 Needs Capes!

D3 Needs Capes!

Im just gonna throw out runescape for example.. i hate the game but back when i used to play my main goal was CAPES!

Now think about it.. blizzard has many many options with capes. lets say.. kill 10.000 monsters and you get a cape, now this is rewarding to the pvm'ers out there instead of just items and killing now you can get an awsome cape to show how much work uve put into pvm.

well blizzard can also add capes into pvp.. lets say 10 kills without dieing or kill 100 other online players..

now its not my job to tell how it can not be exploited. because honestly i have no idea; thats blizzards job

they would haft to make capes untradeable and when dropped other players would not see them on ground. but comeon blizzard can you not see how cool capes are?

CAPES FTW!

Capes always look crappy.

See, guildwars

see also, World of Warcraft

Capes make characters look like retro superhero wannabees. Please blizz, leave capes for champions online and the like.

sorry that does not sound that great to me. Everyone easily would get both of the "capes" you just mentioned easily, some before even completing the games. the only merrit system that would be good and that is good in the diablo world is the ladder, it would be kool how ever if you got some title when you are lewading the boards overall and per class, especially if the add in some type of system, where you could loose your first place standing after max level by some means. I.E. still letting you gain and loose experiance after you are the capped level.

I think capes can look quite cool if done right. But its true that no loot-based game ever managed to make capes look good but if they are fluid and varied enough it can be a sigh to behold.

It could work but its not extremely necessary, maybe an extra equip slot for a possible Diablo 3 expansion? Who knows.

If there's still a lobby like for D2 it would be kinda cool if your character were wearing some kind of travel gear while there, like a cloak or something.

Re: D3 Needs Capes!

An aura or title could do the same thing.

Thing is, capes could be traded so they are meaningless. The guy who has the best cape has no proof that he won it himslef...unless it's bind on pickup, and do we really want that in our d3?

Here's my take: Capes are in, as an item like they were in d1. Make them have extra magic properties (kind if like circlets in d2) since thier def is going to be low. As for the accomplishment/reward, use auras or titles if you don't die afeter X PvM kills (of around your level) and Y PvM kills (of around your level).

I welcome the idea of capes. And given that we are talking about a Blizzard game, how likely is it that the idea would be poorly implemented. I also see capes as very common "hero" attire. i wouldn't go so far as to say "superhero" its not like you are going to see something bright with a hero symbol on it, like a big yellow "S". and capes look really good in WoW. why not in D3. capes are also VERY medieval in nature, attire wise. and i don't need to remind anyone here what atmosphere and time d3 is based on...

I really don't see it fitting into Diablo. Shoulder pads ok, the characters had them even though there was no such slot in the inventory. I have nothing against health orbs, color, etc., but capes disgust me, sorry :p.

Apparently capes were planned to be added in D2:LOD, but the idea was dropped (changed to circlets perhaps?)

Natalya can be seen wearing a cape still :dopey:

I thought capes worked fine in Mythos, although there were some graphical issues, I say that was more to do with it being a beta game than capes themselves.

Extra loot slot for more bonuses is always fun.

I believe that capes are very important in these types of games, but as stated below.....

The fluidity of capes in MMOs and RPGs aren't quite there yet, and it's been almost a year since first gameplay footage was released from Blizzard, so they COULD already be considering this with the new graphics.

The technology actually already exists. It's been around for many years and we have been seeing it in pre-rendered game movies, and -- even without realizing it -- on the cinema, and even on commercials. And it's being perfected over the years.

The problem is that realistic cloth physics demand an engine of their own and this has been hard to handle with today's hardware, considering there's all sort of other engines that are also needed and have been preferred (ragdoll comes to mind, for instance). Meanwhile the cloth engine itself is actually quite complex and demanding since it has to include such features as special meshes that don't go well with polygon based meshes, morphing, particle-based motion, and even it's own collision detection.

It's still possible to do reasonable good looking cloth behavior with the simplest of tools. However they will fall short because movement will always be restricted to these meshes stress lines removing fluidity and constraining motion.

...

Sooner than later, we will have the home hardware capable of handling these engines along with everything else that goes on in a game.

The problem with capes is that when you wear them every character suddenly looks similar. You can't do as much with cloaks and capes as you can with armour. We already have enough inventory slots for them to easily keep balance. So i think its unecessary and would take away from the pretty armour pictures they'll draw (also, they could run through some clipping issues where you have gigantic armour under a cape - does the armour poke through? do you just not see the armour at all (closed cloaks)? Do you bother putting a huge effort into redesigning things so capes sit over armour nicely?
