culinary arts

I have come to the life changing decision of what I want to do after school. I would like being becfme a chef. A chef extraordinaire! I know they don't make the best cash but it’s something I really enjoy doing. Cooking is a way to make people happy, I like to make people happy+ I like to cook= I go to culinary arts school. And if I become good enough I can even open my own restaurant. That would be really nice.

Anyways, has anyone ever taken a culinary arts class? What are they like? How do they function? Do they cost more then ordinary classes? And where are some good schools. In the U.S and abroad. I'd like to go to a foreign country to learn to cook.

Can I get some links to good schools? Thanks in advance because you guys never let me down. That berserker thread practically wrote my entire paper. Thanks for that too. Major thanks to ash and anakha for them awesome links.

I haven't gone to school, but I have worked in a few different restaurants, from dishboy to bunboy, to fry guy to first broiler, expo, head cook, to assistant chef...to assistant manager. just about anything on the line and the prep and both. I've even helped put together a few menu items. I'm not all that good...I can take recipes and make them easily...i invent my own stuff here and there..a.dn i can take a few recipes and make them work...that kinda stuff...but i don't create like you see on Iron chefs very often. it'd be cool if I got more chances for that.

I would suggest only going into the field if you could get into a very good school. Culinary arts is a great field to be on top of...but a terrible field ot be on the bottom of. working as a cook in a restaurant long term would drive me crazy. if you're lucky you can keep moving up to the next level of restaurant...if you're lucky.

best situation would be to open your own place...or get some sort of TV show...thought that's very very rare. I thin most people take culinary arts classes as a hobby...something I'd love to do. if only I had time.

g/l with your cooking endeavors!

Work in a restaurant first. Then, upon realizing that being a chef is awful, choose something else.

As with most professions, if you can make it into the upper echelon you can actually make a good living at it. I say if you truly feel that this is a life calling, then go for it... provided it makes you happy - that's what counts.

Social work however, sadly does not have an upper echelon. ;)

NO! Youre supposed to suport my decision. I really really enjoy cooking. I don't think i would enjoy doing the same dishes everyday. I was thinking something like culinary arts/business for schoolins.

Ps.. what do culinary arts school look for in new students? Good hs grades?

LOL it's not all awful...but I couldn 't do it for the rest of my life. The idea is to move your way up and out from behind the line and become a restaraunt owner, or executive chef somewher...wher you're running a very large kitchen and not doing as much cooking, more creating new dishes and plating. lots of training and motivating...

but yeah...definetely work in a restaurant for a year or so first...and wear cheap pants.
