    Cube recipe question

I have a rare morning star that I socketed with Larzuk's question and put a skull into.

I'd like to use the cube recipe to upgrade the morning star to the exceptional version of it, but I'm not sure if this will destroy or alter the socket/skull I've put into it.

Can anyone tell me if I can upgrade the weapon without losing the socket I put in it? If for some reason the socket remains but the skull is removed, that's fine. I just want to make sure the socket itself doesn't get removed.

Your skull will be safe. Upgrading will not affect any sockets.

    from
    http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/cube.shtml

if the item is socketed, then jewels or runes and their mods will also remain

1 Ort Rune + 1 Amn Rune + 1 Perfect Sapphire + Normal (Basic) Rare Weapon
    = Exceptional Rare Weapon
    The item type is upgraded.

1 Ral Rune + 1 Thul Rune + 1 Perfect Amethyst + Normal (Basic) Rare Armor
    = Exceptional Rare Armor
    The item type is upgraded.

1 Fal Rune + 1 Um Rune + 1 Perfect Sapphire + Exceptional Rare Weapon
    = Elite Rare Weapon
    The item type is upgraded.

1 Ko Rune + 1 Pul Rune + 1 Perfect Amethyst + Exceptional Rare Armor
    = Elite Rare Armor
    The item type is upgraded.

I used to play a lot many years ago (from release up to several months before 1.10). I just picked the game up again, so I've got to start all over from scratch XD. There's an enormous amount of new stuff from 1.10 and 1.11, and I'm pleased to see that it's generally much easier to find reasonable equipment on your own with so many cube recipes (such as the one I asked about here) and socketing possibilities.

I've been playing with a friend (He's a bowazon with freezing arrows; I'm a paladin with zeal/fanat and eventually vengeance for backup), and almost all of our equipment has been gambled or largely modified through sockets/cube.

We've had our share of difficulties in the early stages of nightmare, though, and I can't imagine how much worse it'll get in hell. Many unique packs we encounter kill me almost instantly, and I have no idea what I can do about it. Something like fire enchanted/lightning enchanted (despite my maxed fire resistance and ~45 lightning resistance) kills me before I have a chance to do anything about it.
