I´ve made a few nice crafted wands for my necros. Nothing that has beaten a plain Necromancer´s wand, though.

I don´t craft body armors, even though I always play untwinked. Set, unique, runeworded or simply plain socketed armors will nearly always beat rare/crafted ones.

I have crafted some good boots a couple of times. Here is one example (the Blood recipe):

    SniperBlazie's Bone Stalker
    Light Plated Boots

    Defense: 53
    Durability: 18 of 18
    Required Strength: 50
    Required Level: 44
    Item Level: 79
    +11 to Life
    Fire Resist +28%
    Lightning Resist +34%
    3% Life stolen per hit
    Replenish Life +9
    20% Faster Run/Walk
+42 to Defense (Based on Character Level)

Just this past week. Mid level NM, I found a set of Bramble Mitts with low amount of MF.

I crafted a set of Caster Bramble Mitts with a boatload of mods, including 25ish% MF(unsure off the top of my head) and 9% mana regen. Very much worth the rune and gem.

the things that can be crafted and turn out really nice, that is better than most uniques/etc, are rings/amus/gloves/belts/boots.
Weapons can easily be beaten with cheaper runewords/uniques, same with armors/shields.
Its not worth "wasting" resources such as gems on crafting those, since you almost always can buy better items with the gems ;)

In the long run..sure..but thats only because there are fewer mods that can spawn on gloves/boots/etc then can spawn on weapons.

In doing a rough count, I came up with about 26 mods for gloves, while melee weapons have about 40. Considering also that you get an item with ~4 mods on it, the odds lie more in crafting good gloves than a good weapon.

The saving grace to this is that you can craft a weapon with 300% ED, though it most likely would take a bunch of tries.

I'm into crafting lately for the fun of it.. you never know what you will hash up. I did a caster bone wand last night. Great mods..just not great mods for a wand :) (I think (on top of the caster mods) dual leech, ED and +2 life tap, +1 IM --bleh)

For the record, it deals more damage than an eth BotD.

Fake, edited, or hacked. Crafts cannot beat Eth BotD weapons in terms of raw dmg.

    Perfect craft: One-Hand: 190-524 (357 avg) (20 min/max, 610% ed)
    perfect EBotD: One-Hand: 185-545 (365 avg) (15% superior)

    Yes, I even used two Ohms (300% Cruel, 150% master's, 60% recipe, 100% 2x Ohm = 610% ed).

As shown by the link, rares can beat BotD in raw dmg.

    450% ed rare with 2 Ohms and 20 min/max: One-Hand: 254-709 (481.5 avg)

that rare axe is pretty close to perfect on every freaking mod, even ethereal with repair. Wonder what one of those would go for on the forums ;)

One thing to note, botd gives 30 str, that adds to dmg right?

it contributes to the total damage, yes. It also gives dex and vita and energy, which are all useful. And more ias, and indestructible, and lower reqs, and more and more :)
that is, botd is often better, and sure cheaper

yea but lets be real ... if you had that rare or crafted axe ... there is no way you would use a BotD.

Not with the non-self-repairing one. I'd have that laminated and frame it next to my...well I guess I don't have anything that compares to that.
