    Cowards beat National Guardsman

Did I not tell you that this would happen? Let it be vets that catch the scumbags and not the cops.

Thats what you get for not having a draft. Had you had a draft those men wouldnt have been around to assault him.

The irony of a committing an act of violence against someone in protest of the fact that they are trained to commit acts of violence is overwhelming.

    I hope they get caught.

I figured it was precisely that "irony" that made it pretty obvious that these weren't hippies but someone that had a personal grudge against this specific guy that probably transcends his guard status. Who takes the time to dress up in gang colors and cruise around hoping to randomly bump into a member of the National Guard so that they can beat him for peace? And what kind of beatnik drives an SUV, particularly in such a gas-wasting manner as searching all over town for random guardsmen? There's a lot just in this initial report that make it perfectly clear that this wasn't in any way related to the war.

I think it would be a mistake to assume that people can't be ridiculously hypocritical. Take, well, Smeg for example. He'll certainly complain loudly about activist judges and how they are trashing the constitution, but give him a free speech issue he's uncomfortable with, and he's ready to form a lynch mob in half a second flat.
And it might not be; I have no way of being sure. I guess, it doesn't matter so much why they did it as the fact that they did do it. Assault is assault, after all.

5 guys and a gun to beat up a single guardsman...they must grow them bigger south of the border than our reservists up here...was the dude 10' tall?

Those 5 guys are lucky he wasn't a Marine or one of the special forces in the lesser branches. Those 5 would have died.

They were obvious cowards who wouldn't have done a thing if they wouldn't have outnumbered the guardsman.

Low. I wonder if these guys are connected to those religious wackos who picket funerals. Probably not, they're most likely just your average scumbags.

While I find it to be a shame and I hope the guy is alright. I also don't see the big deal, Worse things happen to people every day of the year. So what if he's a guardsman, it doesn't make his story any more important than anyone elses. In fact this story isn't really very news worthy at all.

It allows Smeg to blame the goddamn liberals and bring up Vietnam again, so to him it's news-worthy.

Not surprising at all, unfortunately. Considering that there is actually such a thing as a "homeless war veteran" I would say our country doesn't do a very good job at promoting respect towards these people who definitely deserve to have it.

There is a story that I'm not 100% sure is true.
In Kingston some bikers beat up someone from the Kingston armed forces base.
The next day not a bike in the city was left unsmashed.

I heard it quite a while ago, and was told it had happened 20 years earlier and that Hells Angels still wouldn't go into the city.

What makes you think so? The motive could've as well been: "You haven't seen no action, greenhorn! So it's time to show you some!"'

It is an affront to the public order done in a distinct and somewhat rare way.

Admittedly, things fitting that bill happen pretty often.

How so? We have to buy everyone who serves in the army a house? What if they spend all their money on drink or betting on horses and lose their houses? Serving in the military is a job, you get paid for it like everyone else. It's a dangerous job so you get paid well. You also get a number of other benefits, I understand; my dad apparently bought his house on an extremely generous mortgage (or the price was discounted, I don't know the details) because he served in Vietnam. Beyond that, what more can they want?

I recall something about that. It was the Navy that trashed the bikes.

They get paid well? My buddy will be happy to hear that, though he might wonder when the good pay starts. He is a SEAL and is running around 24k now. Yay for him.
