Cow king set

What is the best way to get them to drop?

Can only the king drop an item from the set, or can all cows drop it too? Does the king have a higher chance? Which difficulty is the best?

General tips and information about obtaining cow king set?

The king has a higher chance, but 'normal' cows can drop the pieces too.

As for difficulty, the helm can only be dropped in NM & Hell cows, with NM having the better odds. The best odds for the boots & armor are in Normal (I think it's the helm - it's one of the 3 that's not available in Normal, but I can't remember which one).

Personally though, I'd just go to Hell and search there. Maybe you'll get a HR while searching for the pieces, and odds are you'll find many nice socketables along the way too. No matter what you do, the odds aren't that great, so it will take some persistence.

The Boots and Armor are easily harvested doing cow runs in Normal, killing the cow king.
Easy if you can have someone open the portal for you or if you can run a second D2 client in a legitimate manner.
The helm is harder to find as you need to kill Nightmare or Hell cows to get it. I did a lot of Nightmare runs to get mine last time I wanted to complete the set.
If you've got a hell cower, you may want to run them for the reasons that SirPoops listed.

I just want the boots.

I've done about 4 hell runs and haven't found a single one. And cow runs are boring. Should I just continue? How big is the difference really?

The pieces of the set drop very infrequently, unless you go straight for the King, in which you will probably collect the entire set after killing the Cow King perhaps 100 times.

The boots are definately the easiest though. I must have found 8+ Cow Boots before getting my first Cow Hat.

4 runs is nothing! Here's a thread about http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=542663 the Cow King set items you may find useful. My method for running the Cow King:

I got not only the Cow King set items but also a pretty good haul of TC3 items from running the Cow King, in both normal and nightmare. If you are going to run the Cow King, you need two characters, so here was my method:

Two characters- enchantress and frenzy barb with decent Find Item.

Enchantress gets the leg, makes the portal, enchants the barb.

The barb wields dual Ali Babas and wears lots of MF gear, maybe something with crushing blow and has decent lightning resists. He jumps through the red portal, whacks a few cows not to kill them nescessarily, but just to get FRW up and going so he can race around to find the Cow King fort.

One he finds the fort, he Howls to isolate the Cow King, kills the King, horks the corpse, and then it's time to start another game. Howl is great since that way the Cow King corpse is by itself and you don't waste time horking a bunch of corspes to find the King's corpse.

The normal King is a great source of TC3 items, as well as potentially 2/3 of the Cow King set. It doesn't take a great enchant for the barb to kill NM cows, but Hell cows are too much for this method.

I did this with two computers, both TCP/IP for SP and on b.net for the realms, and it is a pretty efficient way of getting TC3 and Cow King items. I also have done this in Classic (wielding dual Gulls instead of Ali Babas but basically the same process) as it's a good way of getting Gulls and Death's Sash, which are primo items in Classic.

I don't have enough patience to make a barb, since I only want one pair (and I also only have 1 cd-key)
