    Conviction's -Defense in PvP... (question)

    Hello!

I'm making a PvP Charger Paladin and wondering if I should equip Fanaticism (for AR and damage) or Conviction (for -defense).

How does the -defense work from Conviction for PvP? Would using it ultimately land me more hits than Fanaticism's AR boost? Thanks for the help!

in pvp conviction works according to the following formula:

final defense = base defense x (1+ [sum of +def]* - [sum of -def]**)

    * i.e. shout, holy shield, cold armors
** i.e. conviction, eth runes in weapon (eth runes work with half effect)

therefore, conviction is not too effective against high def enemies.

fana is likely to be the better choice. might can also be used though. frees a lot of points, although not being as effective as fana.

Eth runes and other sources of -% def from items work multiplicatively with skill +% def (and -% def), not additively.

Cloak of Shadows is also multiplicative. Which means that convic will destroy sins, even if they have this on.

Here is an example for you showing the effects of each aura against a sin:
assuming 2500 base ar and level 20 either fanata or convic
against a shield using assassin with 2700 defense before +52% CoS

Fanata: 5875 ar against 3688 defense gave 61% chance to hit

Convic: 2500 ar against 368 defense gives 87% chance to hit

Here is an example for you showing the effects of each aura against a BvB:
    same stats as above
against a Barb with 3200 defense before +300% total shout/iron skin:

Fanata: total ar 5875 against 12.8K defense gave 32% chance to hit

Convic: 2500 ar against 9920 defense gave 20% chance to hit

    - yes I know that 300 shout/iron skin may be low for a BvB, but this is just an example.

-sorcs get 99% ed from shiver armor at level 10
-palys holy shield gives 100% ed at level 6

against characters without some decent passive defense increase (zons/druids/sins) conviction will be useful. But because of diminishing returns on the -defense portion of this skill, and the other good melee mods fanaticism carries, in general I would say fanaticism is the better aura.
