"Connection Interrupted" bug

So I recently reinstalled Diablo 2 for the first time in years and after only a week of playing, I'm getting the connection interrupted bug that I've since read about on Google. Count me in as another wrongly-accused person who was simply running multiple Baal games and definitely not cheating/botting/etc.

So is there anything I can do about it? It's been two days now. I'm really considering just ending this week-long nostalgic trip and acting like it never happened.

About the only way to deal with it is play single player and use the /players 8 function to make up for it... B.net just isn't friendly to anyone but Pallys anymore, I think...

Sigh. About how long is the average length of this temp-ban?

And mind sharing how I do the /players 8 function in single player...? :undecided:

1) So long as you don't continually try to log in, it lasts about 5 minutes.

2) Just type in "/players 8" and the game will act like there are 7 others in the game for the purposes of difficulty/XP... Alternatively, you could punch any number between 1 and 8.

Thanks for the info on that.

And regarding the temp-ban. I let it sit for at least 30 hours and I'm still getting it.

Does the message inform you that you've been temporarily restricted from the realm? If it gives you an error message with an (8) on the end of it, that's actually a permanent ban.

But temp bans can easily last 30 hours, assuming before you started letting it sit you tried to log in more than a couple times. I've heard from people whose temp bans have lasted 2-3 days, because they managed to keep renewing the ban every so often - probably just before it would've been lifted, too. If it's still doing this after 48 hours, I'd contact Blizzard. But chances are, if it's a temp ban it'll be lifted long before anyone even gets a chance to look at your message and take action on it. If it's a permanent ban, then they're not going to do anything about it period.

Sorry you got hit with this, but I think the best we can tell you is just 'wait it out'. It certainly can take quite a while...

Ok thanks for the heads up, I'll quit trying to see if it's been lifted for a few days.

And no, it doesn't mention anything regarding being "temporary" anything. It just says my connection has been interrupted (every 30 seconds or so after I join a game).

Are you spamming meteor/bone wall/anything that might be causing the game to lag? C/Is are handed out like candy these days, whenever the game gets too laggy. This was done in response to the recent "public dupe method" that has been flying around. So now you'll be C/Ied in a heartbeat if your game gets too laggy. This could result in a temp ban, but it's also the kind of thing that'll still happen when you return from your temp ban assuming something's happening that'll cause the game to lag.

Also, there are a lot of jerks out there that'll intentionally do this to a game, just out of cruelty/boredom/an extra chromosome/whatever causes people to do things like this. Single Player is the only real way to get 100% around it, but playing by yourself/with people you know and minding your lag-causing activities will help a lot as well. What specifically were you doing at the time the games C/Ied on you?

I actually got the "temporary disabled" thing about 3 times in the past two weeks because I was just excited to be back in the game and was running consecutive, fast rush games (Tristram, Baal, etc). I don't recall doing anything when I first got the universal "connection interrupted" thing.

As far as lag goes, even though I'm new back to D2, I totally understand what you're describing. However I've been using a Barb and an Amazon so I haven't been using anything quite so lag-happy.

The "connection interrupted" message isn't really a bug, as the function is quite intentional and it's doing what it was designed to do. It just happens to impede more honest players than it does cheaters.

Still, it's manageable to play around. Just don't create or join games too fast, or spam certain skills. The only times it really does pose an obstacle that there really isn't a solution for is if you're fighting the Ancients with a point in Cloak of Shadows, or have a minion with that skill, or if your attack speed is fast enough for the chance to cast on a Torch to drop the game.

What's this Torch I keep on hearing about? I mentioned my problem in one of the chat channels and someone mumbled something about a Torch (capital-T as well). I can't seem to recall any torches from when I used to play D2.

My single-player pally is up to level 9 now. I was sure not to cast any auras too quickly. I wouldn't want to upset the Man. oO

As far as torches are concerned, this thread's going to be your best friend. It explains all about them, how you get them, and everything leading up to getting them.

Keep in mind that thread came from right after the Ubers were introduced, so it's a bit antiquated now - but it explains what's going on in good detail, and I like it. Makes me happy.

Switching between auras won't drop a game. Well, nothing will on single player anyway, but if you were on the realms that is. The connection interrupted message is triggered by things that are very graphic-intensive or are otherwise liable to cause lag. Spells like Meteor, Lightning Fury and Bone Wall are some of the most likely. I'd encourage playing on the realms. There's just more to do. You'll get used to it.

Depends on what he means by "switching auras." If you use the scroll button on your mouse and roll it around real quick for a bit battlenet will boot you. I first noticed this out of boredom once.

EDIT: Overlooked the SP part...regardless it's kind of interesting when you are just flicking your scroll mouse and then boom c/i and 5 minute temp ban.

I was hinting at sarcasm when I mentioned being temp-banned from *all* the lag changing an aura would create...on *single player* ;)

Re: "Connection Interrupted" bug

I'm sorry i read through this whole forum and still don't quite understand, I can be playing online for hours. Usually im doing my own private, passworded games, doing boss runs and rune runs. I'm a hammer paladin, but almost everyday i run into the same problem 30-45 seconds into the game i get an "connection has been interrupted" message. Whether im joining or trying to host, doesnt matter. Usually doesnt stop till i leave it for a day. Is that a temp ban? If so what did I do wrong? I do attend baal runs occasionally.

Re: "Connection Interrupted" bug

well, since this thread was recently bumped... I have been experiencing a similar problem lately, can't stay more than a few minutes in a game without getting connection interrupted... this is really annoying and it's been like this for days now...

I have heard all kinds of explanations for it, temporary ban, permanent ban, ip ban, serialkey ban, slow ping, firewall/antivirus issue, causing lag with skills and so on... it seems no one really knows the real reason for the constant interruptions
