Confused about resistance in Hell

i know its lowered by 40 in nightmare, and 100 in hell. Does this mean 40 and 100 percent?? If so, does this mean that in Hell you can't have any resistance whatsoever?

but aren't your resistances represented in percentages?? So how do you know how many points you have?

it just subtracts 100.
lets say u have 50 lightning resistances. once u enter hell, it subtracts by 100 so u would have -50 lightning resistances.

So I guess it's pointless then to dump too many points into Natural Resistance then right?

In dueling, stacking resistances isn't pointless, and sometimes there's not a better use for excess skills.

The percentage value is only used with respect to final damage, which means it's used during damage calculation. Addition and subtraction of resistances is straight because it changes the actual values used in the calculation, having a much greater impact.

How should lowering a target's resistance by 100% affect them? If you say increasing the damage by 100%, then it really doesn't matter whether it's the end damage or the beginning damage, but that's still increasing the damage and why not just say that? Increasing 1000 toward 75% would amount to 2000, then 500, whereas lowering resistances subtracts 100% from 75%, giving you -25% effective, which turns that 1000 into 1250. This is why there's a difference between them and why, in most cases, it's more valuable because of its rarity and difficulty in stacking, making the first point above even that much more relevant.

I agree, there's probably a more competent way to do it, but adding more concepts to the original Diablo and then Diablo2 after it was released prematurely has consequences. You'll get used to the idea, it shouldn't take long and will seem like second nature if you're good at math.

Soft maximums of resistances are 75%, hard maximums are 95%. If you have 300% in hell, then you'll naturally have 75% and an excess of 125%. That means if you're hit by Lower Resist and/or Conviction, reducing your resistances by 125%, you'll still reach the soft max. The max is applied after the final amount of resistance is calculated, which is why more than 50% physical resistance can counter - in part - Amplify Damage (I don't think it's possible to get 150% total for that, but...).

I'm aware, but without other skills to max the extra ~20% resistance from a handful of points leftover has no better place. Allows less effort getting the gear, too, since it tends to be expensive for high-end dueling.
