    Come on in!

Both my front and back doors are unlocked. Just the screen doors are closed (but not locked). No barriers at all.

    It's 12:46am on Wednesday Sept 20th, 2006.

I've no worries for my safety.

I do spend a lot of time thinking about that.

    I am lucky.

So you're saying it's actually all the corpses draped on my balcony that are protecting me from burglars?

I don't know what was going through the owners mind or what his experiences with crime were but my last flat had a serious front door.

Solid Oak with a 3mm iron plate bolted to a similar plate on the other side of the door down the entire height of the lock side of the door. The doorframe on the lock side was reinforced with a steel rod and the hinge side had steel plugs (on a steel plate bolted to the wood facing the hinge) that slotted into sockets when you closed the door.

I'm glad I never lost my keys...

If it was a ****ty part of town maybe - but this was in one of the best areas of London. For a price guide a standard 2bedroom flat in the area (~700square feet) would easily set you back $600,000 (yes - 5 zeros).

The landlord was also some sort of insurance analyst.

I think (this is also based on my dealings with him) that he's just one of those paranoid types.

I live in Philly and I never lock my doors when I'm home. I think my city's safe, we've only had 280 or so murders this year. But you can't come in.

That is pretty darn scary in itself. My house is ~3,000 square feet, sure as heck wasn't $600,000.

Another advantage to living in the boonies, I guess.

We frequently leave our doors open too.

Yeah, but I'll bet that right next to that massive, impregnable door was a glass window...

I probably would have things set up the same way, but my wife is ridiculously paranoid. I blame her Dad. If he goes out front to work on a car, mow the lawn, or paint the walkway (no more than 5 feet from the front door), he locks both the knob and the deadbolt. This is in a neighborhood where more deer have broken through sliding glass doors, then burglars have broken into houses. My parents live (literally) 100 meters away, and they haven't locked their deadbolt in 5 years.

Granted, my wife and I currently live in a neighborhood where many people have bars on their basement windows, and a few months ago, the middle school serving our neighborhood made national news when two bodies were found there after being killed by the MS-13 gang, but there hasn't been anything at all in the police blotter in our neighborhood since we moved in in December and the bodies were obviously killed elsewhere and dumped (we're just off 2 major highways). Overall, I think paranoia is more dangerous than any area. If someone targets my house, they're going to get in no matter whether the doors are locked or not.

EDIT: yay for hickup glitch that makes superdave's icon huge again!

I almost always lock my door...though I could probably get away without it. Just something for peace of mind, I guess.

No glitch...blame certain mods for that one.
