cold res

how effective is infinity at removing cold immunes? i know it does remove some but is it really worth using over reapers toll?
im running my blizz sorc but im doing pits aswell and shenk and eld, so how much more useful would infinty be over reapers?
because i have an eth infinty cv lying about on one of my characters :whistling:

then again now i muled it over there is no comparison.. with more than 3k damage on infinity over reapers, and the odd chance of a cold immune being removed, sorry for wasting time and posts etc.. i should have investiugated myself a bit more :S

Re: cold res

Immunity means having 100% or more res and cold immunes are typically too far beyond that to break it with Infinity (which works just at 1/5 of it's strength on immunities), so it's not effective to break cold immunity. It's very useful to break lightning immunity because most lightning immune monsters aren't far beyond 100%, but you will also need other -lightning res gear (which will start doing its work once the immunity is broken). Fire immunity is inbetween. Infinity respectively conviction doesn't work at all against poison immunity, only lower resist does.

Needless to say, any kind of -res gear is very useful when the monsters aren't immune, in particular versus monsters with high resistances. A 90% LI monster will be down to 10% when its res can be lowered by 80%, i.e. an attack of th element in question will deal 9 times as much damage. Attacks of other elements will still work better, of course.

Re: cold res

Basically the only time that Infinity will remove a cold immunity is against a random boss that isn't normally cold immune, but it spawns with some combination of Cold Enchanted (+75% Cold Resists), Magic Resistant (+40), and/or Spectral Hit (+20). There might be a few exceptions where the monster's natural resistance is around 100% cold (I've never checked), but they'll be few & far between.

For Infinity to break an immunity, you need to find a monster with a resistance value of 116 or lower. Most cold immunes have more like 150+% Cold Resistance. So if I had to estimate the number of cold immunities removed by Infinity, I would put it at something like 0.02% of cold immune monsters.

Still, Infinity is a nice weapon for a merc, and when mixed with a combination of Cold Mastery and +skills it's pretty easy to bottom-out any monster's cold resistance (-100% final result is as low as you can push them). And if you don't have a lot of points in Cold Mastery, it'll probably help your damage a lot against many non-cold immunes.

Re: cold res

If you're in the earlier acts of hell, it will remove many cold immunes. in the later acts though, it will hardly break any immune

Re: cold res

yeh i noticed it removes most of the cold immunes in the pit which was the only problem really, also the damage output is just above 3k over reapers toll which always helps too ^^
