Cold Mastery help!!! =/

Alright.

I'm building a blizz sorc to run meph in hell using the drop bug.

I obtained the idea from a friend, who does it QUITE well.

I just need some help, cause he hasn't been around in a few days, lol.

I just finished mazing blizzard and ice blast, and I'm doing about 1.5k.

Now, when running meph, which is going to get me more damage...

Maxing Ice Bolt

OR

Maxing Cold Mastery?

I'm REALLY new to the sorc, and I've read numerous posts about cold mastery, but I still don't know which I should do =[

I'll reiterate: The ONLY this this character will be for is running meph.

Thanks guys!!

edit: So! After harrasing many people in game, I've been told you need at least 17 cold mastery (with + items) for normal play, and even more for meph. So, I think I'm gonna max cold mastery... but I'm not placing a single point till I hear from my forum peeps =D

edit on the edit: AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!

I'm so sorry for the bump =[

I thought I was typing in the edit box =[ =[ =[

8) The answer you got in game is correct. With slvl17 on CM you will be able to deal 100% extra damage on most monsters. It will be good enough for Mephisto as well, but adding more hard points into CM will make your character kill him faster.

Also you will never ever need more than slvl32 Cold Mastery, since with slvl32 you reach the -100% reduction cap, from where on no further resistance can be reduced. So look at your +skill gear and see for yourself, if you will need to max Cold Mastery or not!

About bumping: You saw it yourself and said so, so no worries. Just remember for the next time ;)

Nitpick: it's possible, but quite rare, for a monster to have more than 75% cold resistance, but less than 100%. So points beyond level32 would help you in that specific case.

... but I agree with your point, you really won't need to go ever beyond level32 (unless, perhaps, you're considering PvP). Most of the time, that would just be a waste of skillpoints.

And Dark_Shadow, 99% of the time, as long as a monster's final resistance is still above -100%, then points in Cold Mastery will boost your damage more than points into a synergy. To try to clarify that statement...

In the case of a monster with 0% natural cold resistance, getting your mastery to level17 will lower him to the -100% limit, and any additional points in the mastery won't reduce that resistance further, so any extra points in your mastery are useless.

But Mephisto has 75% natural cold resistance in hell, so you'd need to get your mastery to level32 (-175%) to reduce his cold resistance to the -100% limit.

(I'm discounting other factors, like Rainbow Facets, that will lower an enemy resistance too; but if you've got some of those, they'll add onto the effect of your Cold Mastery, meaning you'll need less points).

I don't recommend maxed cold mastery. I do recommend getting -199% enemy cold resistace though. You'll have 3 facets. One in ormus, one in deaths fathom and one in nightwing. that gives you -15% enemy resistance already, so you only need a lvl 34 cold mastery. If you look at your +skills, you get +3 from fathom, 2 from nightwing, 3 from amulet, 2 from spirit, 1 from your SoJ, 9 from skillers, 3 from torch, and 1 from anni. if you decide to get a second SoJ instead of ravenfrost, that's another +skill. If you get arach instead of snowclash, you'll get another point in cold mastery, but I think snowclash is soo much better. With 1 SoJ and snowclash, you'll have 24 +skills. If you use dual SoJ or arach, you'll get 25 +skills. If you use dual SoJ and arachs, you'll get 26 +skills.

34-24=10
34-25=9
34-26=8

So, depending on your second ring slot and belt, you'll need 8-10 points in cold mastery.

The reason why I think -200% resistance is beneficial is because you won't have enough points to get an effective immune-killer, and the other places for points (warmth, teleport etc) aren't as beneficial as a few extra %damage. Even though it will give you minimal amounts of damage against a minimal amout of monsters, I think it will be more fun than investing in firewall/nova etc. Just so you can perferct your blizzard and feel the relief that EVERY single non-immune will have -100% cold resistance
