How awesome is that? I know they stole it from Titan Quest, but I'm always a fan of any form of character customization.

This is why purple and royal blue were my favorite dyes in Titan Quest. :p

You'll probably only be able to see it when the character isn't wearing armour. Since if it was the armour that was dyed, the sight would be a little overwhelming.

Jay did say that you'd be able to customize pretty much everything you see on your character, so where in Titan Quest the dye only applied to the clothing (shirts), Jay makes it sound like the dye would apply to the actual armor as well. Maybe not all parts but something like Baldur's Gate appearance system would've been nice.

This is good, I approve. I always wanted to make an Assassin in all black (blacker than the Assassin normally is) with blood red wrist swords representing bloody fangs.

I hope that multiplayer will have a panel where you can view the gear of people in your party. In Diablo 2, even with items always looking exactly the same, I remember questions of "what is your bow?" or "what is that hat?" occupied a lot of time on Bnet. If every item can have its appearance customized with dyes then I think it could become standard procedure for games to start off with 15 minutes of everyone gawking at each-others gear before any killing actually starts.

Sorry to break it up for you all guys .... but the dyes will have limited color choices (pretty much like Titan Quest) .... i remember Jay said 8 or something.

So you don't think we will just be able to paint everything pink or pitch-black .. i'm sure they will try to limit/tailor colors so that they don't ruin the visual look of the game and the visual style the classes they worked so hard to give for each character and turn into in a mess of incoherent eye-hurting colors mishmash ... specially in the MP

There are 15 dyes at this time according to Jay.

Dyes are dyes. They dye.* Paint would be required to remove all of the texture and ruin the colour scheme. Dyes just change the hue and saturation. Also, we all know that 'bright WoWish colours' are the source of all evil and that we must take up pitch forks and torches to keep this abomination from our beloved Diablo.

*Is it just me? Every time I read these two sentances it cracks me up.

my only concern with dye is everyone being colored black. thats how it was in DAOC, everyone had all black on all the time. thats why i went dark purple or green (not together)

Gotta be honest, I'll probably make fair use of colors like black, dark grey, crimson, etc., at least with characters that strike me as sinister or somber, like the Wiz or Barb. Not the Witch Doc, though. I'd keep him purplish. :)

I'm happy for the additional customization options! I do wish there was cloaks being added though - I LOVE the look of a cloak trailing behind as you rush forward and whoop butt ^_^

Good news all around still! :D

    Re: Clothing Customization Announced- Dyes!

An idea to keep everyone from wearing pure black, and add some value to them would be to have dyes drop, or come from salvaged items. Make them hard to find, so it actually takes some work, and having a cool looking character is something you can be proud of, not just "LOL im so cool, i can tlk to vndors, lololol".

That said, regardless of how you acquire the dyes, I am SO gonna make an orange and purple monk.

    Re: Clothing Customization Announced- Dyes!

I don't know about you but I customize my charactes for my own sake, not for the sake of others. Besides, isn't the whole point of dyes to give people some freedom when it comes to customization? That means they must be easy to obtain, otherwise it's hard to customize a character to your liking. It's more a matter of being able to mix and match colors properly, rather than showing off your vendoring skills.

In Titan Quest the vendors would only have a handful of different dyes any time you paid them a visit, but as you played through the game (on normal) you'd eventually encounter all the colors even if you didn't shop specifically for those colors. Something like that could work out in D3, I suppose.

I wouldn't mind having them as common drops, maybe add them to a merchant town beyond the first or second act.

Sure, that goes perfectly with the fast and immediate action they want.

I just hope diablo 3 doesn't turn into a colour fest.
Do we really need people spamming the chat, 'look, I'm ***. Look at my pink barbarian (and then do the silly dance the /dance command does)'.

    Re: Clothing Customization Announced- Dyes!

Titan Quest had *tons* of junk drops so dyes were probably handed to vendors in an attempt to clean up the clutter a bit. The Diablo games haven't been nearly as bad in that regard, so common drops would probably work too.
