childhood cartoon-kid shows

this is a thread for childhood cartoon-kid shows (NOT recent ones, i'm talking before ~2000).

here's some that i really liked that, unfortunately being american, the cartoon-kid shows never got the length or finished that they deserved:

1. jayce and the wheeled warriors
2. red planet
3. pirates of dark water
4. exosquad (i still remember the term NEOsapiens. new humans)
5. he-man and the masters of the universe
6. king arthur and the knights of justice

here's some really good cartoon-kid shows:

1. gargoyles (i'm half shocked disney did this. it's completely different than anything disney has ever done, though it does has the sappy disney elements here and there. i really loved this)
2. TMNT (the original cartoon series)
3. batman the animated series. best batman cartoon-kid show. (was "dark" for a cartoon. more grown up and serious and "dark" and without "sappiness"). (THIS is the comic of batman where raz a ghoul comes from in batman begins movie. if u liked batman begins movie try to find this cartoon as it has an entire saga with/of/about raz al ghoul)

*spoiler*

raz al ghoul is like the devil/anti-christ (actually he is like god's "hand of justice" who does the dirty work for god and smites evil humans or their cities or civilizations) and he is rejuvinated by special volcanoes with green lava (these volcanoes are called lazarus pits). raz is like thousands of years old (which was briefly referenced in batman begins: something like this "rome grow decadent and we (raz and his organization) destroyed that evil city". i think this was when he burnt batman's house down, but maybe not. talking about how gothim has become currupt like ancient cities and needed to be destroyed). well raz al ghoul makes batman his apprentice (just like in begin begins). at the time raz al ghoul is old and weak and dying. batman sees him as wise and a mentor (just like in batman begins). raz's wife tricks batman into helping raz get to a lazarus pit. at the very end of the comic series, it shows batman as an old man and dying. well batman gets taken to a lazarus pit and rejuvinated and defeats some threat to the world (i forgot. it's been a long time).

the lazarus pit has a side effect though. you're filled with rage and anger, as well as the rejuvination and strength. anyways. the comic has a lot devoted to raz al ghoul as he is the main villian.

while not a cartoon, it is a kid show that i really liked:

1. Are You Afraid of the Dark? (an old nickolodean ghost story show series)

not a cartoon or a kid show, it is a show i liked (hey i was/am a science "geek"):

Wow, way too long a post for the title.

I watched a lot of Spider-Man, X-Men (original animated series, of course) and Batman. Also watched Exo-Squad, Darkwing Duck, Duck Tales, Animaniacs (with an emphasis on Pinky and the Brain), Freakazoid, etc. I'm sure I'm forgetting a ton of other ones, but that's what immediately springs to mind.

I'm older than most (can you remember Black and White TV?), the ones that stick out in my mind are mostly early Anime ones like
Astro-Boy

Gigantor

and a weird one I never really understood the plot lines for but still have dreams about
Crusader Rabbit

Wiping out Texas still seems like a good thing :D

X-Men, Batman (I think Batman preceded or followed X-Men on Fox), and Spiderman (which come later than the formers). Just like Croup! I also watched some Long Ago and Far Away, which was hosted by James Earl Jones (I think) as well as Thundercats, although I don't remember much of that.

I can remember watching Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates before school.

I was born in '81, so naturally I grew up with the best cartoons ever created, plus the old stuff they'd show on TV, like the Looney Tunes stuff.

Thank God there's torrents today, so I'm archiving a lot of shows from my childhood so my kids can watch 'em (commercial free!) and not bother with the junk they make today.

I've watched cartoons that are made today, and the word that comes to mind is "lazy". Both in script writing and in the animation quality.

Iron Man, Biker Mice from Mars, Fantastic Four, Spiderman, Ultraman and some Estonian ones. They were great at the time.

There was some Knights of the Round Table type show on FOX (I think it was FOX) too, where they could activate powers based on their symbol. It was weird looking back on it, but I watched it too.

And I can't believe I forgot it in the first post, but I watched everything Looney Toons. Loved Bugs Bunny (go figure) and Speedy Gonzalez but would watch whatever episode was on.

ahem!

just watch the original TMNT cartoon show series compared to the new one they got now out. any any such cartoon of the past where they got a re-make of it today. today's cartoons aren't even up to the standards of 3 three year olds. they make disney seem controversial they are so sappy n simple. tehy are so cliche, the x-men and marvel comic cartoons of today...they make me wanna puke...justice league and batman the brave....ughnnnnn....ben ten.....ughn.....etc.....uuuugnnhnhhhhnnn -gag gag.

i wanna know what the hell happened... did we (the U.S.) censor out them all, and make it so they have to be so gag gag idiotic ???
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
nickolodeon had otehr cool shows too:

anyone remember double dare?

or hidden temple or something like this ?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
i didn't mention looney toons... because, i mean, who hadn't seen and loved them...lol

as for my favorite looney toons, definately the road runner and wile e coyote.

another one i liked...though kinda perted but hey i was young than is:

ren and stimpy!

(i'll never forget the episode where they wrestle and ren n stimpy do the flying buttt pliers!!!, i laughed so hard then when i was little and was watching it)

now that was a gross cartoon with some class compared to now whats on the cartoon network or sponge bob like gross cartoons of today.

animaniacs was cool too.... HEEEEEELLLLOOOOOO NURSE !!!! hehe

Also, I've got an mp3 of "don't whiz on the electric fence".

David the Gnome anyone? The Little Koala?

And yes, Nickelodeon rocked. I loved Clarissa Explains It All, Double Dare, and the Temple one.. I loved the mazes they ran through at the end.

Re: childhood cartoon-kid shows

Not to upset any of you or anything like that, but I think some of you are biased when comparing the cartoons shows of when you were kids to the ones of today, I know at least I used to be.

I am pretty much from the same generation as you are, though I'm from another country so some of the cartoons you mentioned never aired in my country, but Pirates of the dark water as well as the first transformers did. I remember really liking these two cartoons, and there was many more that I have probably forgotten by now, but spiderman as well of x-men, when they finally were showed, was very good.

Now the reason why I think one is biased when comparing cartoon shows from today with the ones when you were a kid is pretty obvious in my opinion. When you were kid it was much more likely that you'd like a given cartoon that today. I have tried to collect many of the old cartoon shows I watched, and many that I did not, but was from the same period, since these where recommended by people, who like you were biased by what they liked as kids.

None of these cartoons fell into my liking, likewise I must say that many of the cartoons I liked when I was younger does not seem very good anymore, I still think spider man is pretty great due to its story aspect, but many of the episodes are meaningless by themselves. Something that I really enjoyed a lot, though not a cartoon was the Power Rangers series, I enjoyed it so much that after it was cancelled in my country after season 3, I would get out of bed 5 A.M saturday morning to see it on german, and believe me I did not understand a word of german. Yet as I still reconize pretty much all I liked back then, then these items of the show just doesn't touch me anymore, as they used to, it's not like I feel I have to go out on the floor and start acting like a power rangers, figthing against a monster(s) after watching a show.

Though the new power rangers show just as well have the same components that I liked as a kid I did to begin with, like many others, think they were much worse than the seasons under the SABAT era, but the things is that the show just got cancelled on the german channel I used to watch it on when Disney took over, and therefore I have no feelings for the episodes I have not seen before.

Now a bit more on topic example:

ahem!
just watch the original TMNT cartoon show series compared to the new one they got now out. any any such cartoon of the past where they got a re-make of it today. today's cartoons aren't even up to the standards of 3 three year olds
I have actually made that comparrision, and first when I saw the new TMNT I could not believe anyone would watch that, though I gave it a chance, and it actually have some pretty decent action and a not too bad story line, that is compared to other cartoons just as spiderman of course.
Oh and I'm talking about the spiderman that ends with the lady in the special machine who can teleport through dimension saying to Parker that they are not going to find the real MJ if anyone should be in doubt, the spiderman show that I still believe to be the best, but honestly, I haven't even compared it to the more recent shows or the really old show (the one where the simpsons movie got its spider-pig theme from).

Now the thing is that, at my birthsday some years ago some friends of mine gave me some of original TMNT on a dvd, and honestly it's junk I really wanted to turn it off while I saw it, but I did also want to give it a chance, so I saw it through, went on youtube, found some of the first episodes, via the list of wikipedia, some randoms in between, and finally some of the last episodes including the final which I know was never shown in my country. The thing about TMNT is that I afterwards remembered that when I was a kid, I would often just randomly find TMNT on TV, see if they were fightning and if I found it cool, and if not, I would just change channel or walk away, the greatness of the original TMNT is something I created while thinking back of how great things was before compared to now, that is, when you were a kid.

Btw. I do not agree with Disney been only bad, I really liked some of their shows, like Aladdin, Darkwind Duck, etc. I guess at some point I just didn't fancy their shows anymore, and that was probably when I would not have had liked any of their shows given I hadn't had memories about them being good.

Try to compare Justice League to the old 70's (I think) Justice League show, the one of today is actually of much more quality IMO.

Actually while I do not like Sponge BOB as well, I never enjoyed animaniacs and pretty much the same for looney toons. Looney toons have pretty much always been in my country, and I liked it when I was very small, but after having seen the same stuff again and again it got very boring, for animaniacs, I guess it was showed rather late in my country compared to U.S, and I probably already had a dislike for the cartoons of that sort at that time, so it's not weird I never liked it.

Thank God there's torrents today, so I'm archiving a lot of shows from my childhood so my kids can watch 'em (commercial free!) and not bother with the junk they make today.
Therefore, though I think it's a nice gesture to do to your kids, then it does not mean, if they don't like the old shows, that they have no taste.

Btw. did anyone watch the Might Max show? It did not air as well in my country, but I had a lot of toys when I was a kid and I always read the story line behind the box, and was pretty sad that it was not shown in TV, well I found it on youtube, and I actually think it's some of the better cartoons, not quite in league with some of those already mentioned, but it's up there about IMO. Though of course not everything you wish you had as a kid turns out to be great, if anyone ever have had the demo of "One Must Fall 2097" (OMF), then they probably wanted the whole version with 4 times as many turnements and 5 times as many robots, well I downloaded it for free, and it's pretty much equal to the demo version, just with some more pixels to be played, I guess they had choosen the robots that diverged the most for the demo.

Oh and is it just me or when you have something on tape, you actually end up by never watching it? I mean I have/had (don't know where the tapes are actually) quite a lot of power rangers episodes on tape, though I never saw them even after the show was cancelled in my country, as well as on the german tv channel a couple of years later. When I have wanted to see them (recently) I have just used youtube, but back then I actually felt it was not even worth it to search through the videos to see some episodes I had forgotten, this at least gave me something to think about, because I have otherwise always seen the things I watched in TV as a child, as something that had a big impact on me, well it probably hadn't after all.

Re: childhood cartoon-kid shows

I'm just going to spew verbal diarrhea in my post and pick out what seems solid.

I just introduced Batman TAS to my little cousins and they freaking love it. I certainly appreciate it a lot more as a kid-friendly, accurate primer on the Batman. I'm seriously considering showing them Mask of the Phantasm. I was hesitant about showing them an animated homicidal Joker until I remembered they watched The Dark Knight up to the hospital scene.

I didn't like The New Batman Adventures, though. It felt extremely different from Batman TAS. Maybe it was the character design, which was made simpler and wholly different. Maybe it was the change in scenery to the near future. Maybe it was the addition of Superman as a recurring character. I'd go so far as to say that Batman TAS is in a continuity completely separate from the DC animated shows like Justice League, TNBA, Batman Beyond and Superman TAS.

Rewatching Spiderman TAS has made a few things about it detracting to me. The pace in each episode was at breakneck speed. I still wonder how the hell I could keep up with the frequency in scene changes. There was a lot of political correctness and executive meddling behind some episodes; examples include using laser stun weapons instead of firearms, substituting other words for kill, changing a recurring character's design (a vampire) into someone who drains people's plasma with suckers in his palms, even one where if Spiderman were to land on the roof he would not harm the pigeons there. Speaking of character design, I never understood why Peter Parker was that buff. I suppose that could be chalked up to his spider strength, but I've never thought of him as a muscleman-type. I also didn't get why certain action scenes were reused so often, particularly when said action scene did not fit in the scenery. If Spiderman is fighting a villian in said villian's well-lit and elaborately decorated hideout, you don't show him backflipping and landing on the floor of an abandoned warehouse at night. In spite of all that, I still like Spiderman TAS. I think they did an alright job balancing the overall storyline arcs across 13 episodes a season. A lot of characters were fleshed out and had distinct personalities.

Exosquad was damn cool. Who didn't want to pilot a heavily armed battlesuit that could fly into outer space, and do so with the power of their mind? I still remember the last episode where the Neosapien on the human side pleaded with the war council on granting his people the right to reproduction. That was a seriously heavy question.

I thought X-Men TAS presented the themes of discrimination and racism very well. One scene in particular poignantly illustrates the depth that hatred can drive people to. Jubilee and some other mutants are held hostage by a group of fanatical mutant-hating people. She implores their leader to release them and asks what she or any other mutant had done to the group to warrant such hate. In a low growl, the leader coldly retorts, "You were born."

I guess what I'm trying to get at is that the cartoons I chose above represented a change in how cartoons treated their audience. They didn't see kids as idiots who needed to be sheltered and distracted every few seconds, but as intelligent people who could handle more sophisticated stuff as they grew into adults.

mumble... mumble... something about furries ruining Animaniacs and Tiny Toon Adventures for me

Back OT, I though Hurcules (spelling?) was good, but the animation was so cheap I picked other things to watch. Spiderman had aweful animation too. I liked Inspector Gadget and it was always a drag to have to go to elementary school knowing that I'd be missing Inspector Gadget. Gadget would use a combo of gadgets in every episode in dire circumstances. The big goons would always grab Penny and tie her up, which I think was a bit too sexual now that I see the eposodes agains.

omg !!! inspector gadget!!!

the cartoon (animated) version was cool. i loved that!

GO GO GADGET !!!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
anyways, my beef with new cartoons comapred to the old (it's not biasedness as i'll explain):

batman beyond (with terri macgiunes as the new young teenager batman). this is a great example. the first episodes of batman beyond were awesome with the blight guy and others. but i jsut watched a recent-newer-newest episode (the return of the joker) (well beyond those first 10 or so episodes when they first showed batman beyond) and it was sooo sappy i wanted to gag. and this is just comparing batman beyond first-original episodes with its newest-newer episodes. i'm not even comparing batman beyond to batman the animated series.

my beef is that the new stuff is SOO sappy so tame so flowery so simple so cliche. i miss batman (TAS=the animated series). i miss it's darkness its more "grown-up ness" more real more sophication more adult atmosphere dialogue themes endings...

this has nothing to do with me being older now. i woulda recognized teh same sappyness with the new cartoons and the "darkness" of batman the animated series and the like as a kid as i do now and woulda had the same reaction/opinion as i do now.

i can't stand the super sappy ideals and endings and dialoue of the recent cartoons-kid shows. i mean i guess they are good for like 1-3 year olds....but so is barney....heck barney is more inappropriate than these new cartoons they making.....gag...barf barf

Re: childhood cartoon-kid shows

I really liked the theme song to Magic School Bus...

"You might get BAKED-INTO-A-PIE!! Oh, magic school bus!"

That's got to be the most rockin' catchy song (in a cartoon)....
Well, TMNT also had a very catchy song. I didn't like how Leonardo had those katanas which mysteriously never cut anyone, and Raphial had those sai which neve stabbed anyone. You can see the sissy stuff Hege was talking about creeping in gradually around the time of TMNT.

The Littlest Hobo, though not a cartoon, had the catchiest TV song ever.
