You could try buying it used on Amazon.com, but there would be no guarantee whatsoever that the CD key works, or that it is not already i nuse by half a dozen people.
There are sites where you can buy CD keys, but we will not talk of them here. Those sites are illegal, and their CD keys have no guarantees either.
If you want to be certain you're not wasting your money, just pay the $20. It is not that much.

I wouldn't buy used keys or anything which doesn't come in its original shrinkwrapping or from the Blizzard online store, except you only want to play single player. You might get a key which has been sold several times or one which has been banned from bnet.

I think gamestops have it for like 10+10€ in Finland at least, so I'd say it's the same amount in dollars probably.
Also, in europe, the battle chest only costs 25€ online, whereas american version costs 40$
That said, I'd recommend buying it from european blizzard store to save some cash

Anywhere where you dont buy it new. I.e. anywhere that is not blizzard, best buy, amazon etc. you are rolling the dice. You could get a d2 game for 3$, or you could get a cd key that doesn't even work for 3$. Diablo 2 + expansion has been 40$ for at least the last 5 years, although this last blackfriday i saw it for 20$ for both!!! the first price cut on the game I have seen here in america in over 5 years.

Anyway, its cheaper than $20 for just D2 without LoD, if thats what you're saying it costs on Blizzard.com
Keep in mind that anywhere you buy it online, you're going to have to pay shipping as well...only Blizzard has direct-download...and thats probably going to offset any savings on the price you might find.
Your best bet to save a few bucks is to find it in a physical store nearby, new.

If you did, you got fleeced since its available at retail - brand new sealed in factory box - for less than half that.
I really hope you didnt pay $45 retail for D2/LOD at any point since like 2004...
