    "cheap" necromancer questions

Well, not a descriptive title, but i couldnt find a better way to sum it up. For a long time i tought i would never play a mancer but somehow i changed my mind. Basically i need advice on what kind of necro i should start with these things taken into consideration:
    - I have restarted with virtually no items a few weeks ago (not like i used to be wealthy ever, but i even lost most of what i had) so i do not have godly gear, and it will be some time before i do
    - for this same reason i want him to have mf. i have one mf char already though, but several non-mf ones, and it would be nice to have another one who can find gear for himself (and the rest).
    - WSK and pits are two places i definitely want to run in solo. my mf sorc can do these but a bit too slowly to be worth it. i imagine a necromancer would have an easier time
    - I will not abuse the Marrowalk bug. I dont have any problem with other people taking advantage of it, but personally i think it is unintended and unbalancing, so the only purpose of Marrowalks for me is getting some $ from Charsi. (hoping, she wont abuse the bug:p )
here is what i think of the guides i have read: (i think i read through all that is posted on the site, but i might be wrong)
    - Fishy: a great comprehensive guide but the char seems a little boring to be played. also 20 CE sounds an awfully lot. And than it ends at 75 points, and although there is some good ideas for the rest of the points, for me it seems they wont make that much of an imporvement.
    - bone or poison specialists: for marrowalk see above, i like the idea of poison-summon hybrid but it looks like it needs splendid gear to be efficent. which i dont have. see above
    - bone/poison "blaster" - if i want a ranged killer i would rather have another sorc honestly. though these chars can be powerful i just dont feel like one.
    - melee: if i find pleasure in dying...i have a lot of chars who can do that for me already:p

    your advice is much appreciated.

Actually, Skelemancers are the class that use Marrows without exploiting the bug --- don't forget that you get +1 or +2 skeleton mastery as well.

I still dumped that one point into bone armor, though --- but since I'm a pure Skelemancer (no bone or poison spells) that's the only Marrowwalks-synergy I use, and while it is useful at times I've played without BA for a long time.

And yes, Skelemancers are "finished" early; I'm at level 91 and have several (5? 6? don't remember for sure) skillpoints left which I haven't spent yet. These will have to go into the curses tree, obviously.

As for the CE --- depending on weaponswitch I'm at 26 (Gull) or 28 (AoKL), and more often than not it feels like the actual range of the explosions is MUCH smaller than what it should be.

As for advice... I can't give any; you'll have to know for yourself what kind of char you like. I've played this one Skelemancer for the whole ladder season now, but at the moment I'm "claiming" some of my hellforges to get some more currency beyond pgems to get gear for another char (thinking bonemancer or, preferably, bowazon... or something entirely different).

In any case, I very much like Skelemancers --- I can do every single area in the game with no problems (yes, even maggots lair, but I still made a Duriel mule for hell...), and since I use Trang Ouls I have both decent and extremely cheap gear, and with all the little MF things I still get close to 300 (granted, some luck with gear was there... found a Gheeds, and my +3 summoning amulet has MF as secondary mod...).
But as you said, it's not everybody's taste...

thanks for your response. i also forgot to mention that this is not a bnet char. (it is sp, and possibly open mp). I think i will try a pure summoner than. a few points into some golems (or golem mastery) maybe, mainly along the lines of Fishy's guide. if i get bored...i can always restart.

Summonmancer is safe and efficient, but if you're looking for a fast killer I feel you'd be looking at the wrong char.

It is one of the cheapest builds around though, and able to solo the game with basically just self-found/shop purchased gear.

Yes full trangs gives great +skills/resists and if u can figure out a way to synergise your fire skills it gives you an extra edge when dealing with PIs in Hell ..the ones that amp damage cannot breaK their immunity :p However if you go SP then Lore, Splendour and Spirit (?) may be good options for early +skills IMO.Summoner Necros are very safe i agree and they can do Pits, Pindle, Shenk, Eldritch rather fast too :D

Lore might be an idea, though i already have helms giving +1 skills. (and a Shako too on my sorc...i hope to find another one for my necro, for mf-ing that would be obviously perfect). Spirit is great indeed, too bad it is not available in sp (afaik we get ladder only items but not ladder only runewords)

If you get around to trade and have a stable currency (bnet ladder, currency pgem / runes) , then all you need is a capable character who can handle him/herself. Non-mf char can also get goddly by getting socketables

I guess that you are not in that environment so I would say go with a pure bone. It deal damage fast with or without marrow walk, learn to use bone wall as meat shield (and learn it’s limit when facing souls and javelin cats) then you can slowly tune your gear toward mf. Mf spawn on most gear so you will be okay if you really try to collect them.

With all the +BnP skill on your gear you would likely to have level 5 – 6 CE not problem by level 40ish. CE is most mana efficient but it does need geo-positioning.

If you don’t want to have a range killer, try your hand on skelly poison. Max skelly and skelly mastery as main skill they can tank, kill, and do wonders. Poison skill when max synergy it is great. The most mana effficient skill in this build I would say poison explosion, unlike CE, PE stays around the hood for a while so whoever walk pass will get the poison. Collect trangs for this build. It is good for you.

hmm, yeah. the poison-hybrid sounds like a very stylish and even effective char. i have mp-d with one just recently it looked like a lot of fun. i think i will have to try both that and a fishymancer eventually.
i dont trade with my sp/open chars (and dont accept gifts either). one reason is that i dont trust people. i know there is trustworthy folk on this forums, but how could i know whom they are being so new to this community. the other reason is that i like the items i find. i will always remember when and where i got my first shako or azurewrath or mal rune etc. traded/donated items dont give this nice feeling.
