    Character expiration bug??

I was going through all my accounts this evening and playing each character since I was down to (a minimum of) three days left for many of them.

I usually update every last character I have on the same day, but what was weird was that some characters said they had 7 or even 8 days left until expiration on them! That didn't concern me so much at first since I still had time on all of them. However, in one account, I played the first two characters and then went to play the third and my screen suddenly tells me that this character has expired!! I know it said three days left when I first loged into that account. Blizzard has some sort of bug in the expiration procedures I'm guessing.

To make matters worse, this happened twice more this evening, all in separate accounts! I was only on edge about one of the characters... he holds many of my hard-earned high-level runes. :scared:

I emailed Blizz tech support about it, so hopefully they'll do something.

Has anyone else seen this happen?

I lost alot of characters, theoretically they say it had been 3 months when they expire, but that is a damned lie for about 6-8 of the guys I lost

That post contributed absolutely nothing. And don't be so negative, I know a number of cases where Blizzard actually replied and did something.

I hope you get them back, Vizier.

If you are on the character menu (where up to 8 characters are displayed) and then select one who might have lets say 10 days left, then take it to the chat rooms, then return to the menu, the days remaining will go away. You will however have not reset the time to take to a game for the character, so the character will expire if you rely on the screen display.

That would be a display error. Its however not Blizzards "bug" since you should know that you have to take the character to a game every 90 days. The days remaining are a reminder to assist you since Blizzard did not need to add that display at all. I dont try to see if I can wait until the last second to do things, but some people do.

Thanks for that update.. I usually allow myself a good week or two of time to go through all my mules, but I was way too busy to get at them last week. I didn't realize that just going into the chat room would NOT reset the timer.. because that's just what I did last night. I wondered if Blizz had changed something to make it a little bit easier on their machines (not having to create/join actual games) but apparently that display is misleading and not to be trusted for REAL expiration resetting. However, I KNOW that those characters did not expire since I reset all of them at the same time the last time around, and each one joined a game as I alwaysy do. If any one of my characters expires, then ALL the characters in that account will expire unless I've played them recently.

Another odd thing I noticed was that I had expired characters in one account (just there to hang onto some names I came up with until I delete them) and their counters were reset with an expiry date instead of saying they had expired (which I knew them to be). Go Figure.

Something else I played around with last night: I have two comps and two (purchased) CDs. Usually, when you log in with 4-6 characters from the same account in quick succession, the realm kicks you out for 5-10 minutes. My comps are on a home network and NAT'd so B.net only sees one IP for both comps. I discovered that if you have each computer log into separate accounts, select a character on one, then select a character on the other, you can exit/reselect characters in quick succession, alternating back and forth on both computers without getting kicked off the realm. This handy for those of us with a lot of characters to refresh. Now that I have to join games with all of them this evening, I'll double check and make sure that this ttechnique still works with game joins. I only got kicked off once using this method last night, but I was doing the switching very quickly, so it might have choked up a tad. When that happened, I couldn't log in with either computer, so it appears to ban based on IP. It would be great if you could reconnect to your ISP with a new DHCP address, then you probably could log back into B.net immediately, unless they're also tracking your CD key. I can't test this since my ISP's system practically forces us to keep the same DHCP addresses on my cable modem forever

In the past, I've noticed that when I create/join a game with one comp and the other comp just has a character selected waiting around, it'll kick the other character off and take it back to the character selection screen. The same happens whether joining or exiting a game while the other char is stting idle. This happens even when both computers are in separate accounts. The CD's are both legit so the key isn't a factor, just using the same IP makes all the difference. However, I've learned that once both characters are in games, then either one can leave/join any game without it kicking the other character out of its game. That's what gave me the idea for the switching technique above. I feel confident it'll work for me this evening, or else it's going to take a while to go through all my characters (300+). Last time it was 4-5 hours of work because it kept kicking me out.

Maybe some people will remember, but i posted here about a very similar situation to this a while back, with the replays and updates that blizz gave me. If you get the same responses as i did Vizier, it will follow a similar pattern to this :

    - Mail blizz tech support problem

    - Recieve reply asking for exactly details (acct name/realm etc)

    - Send information back to Blizz

    - Recieve mail from Blizz informing me that chars had expired (although they had 5x days till expiration letf on them) Blizz informs me i hadnt played the chars for 2 hours in the last 2 months

    - Reply to mail, informing blizz that i a) have checked every mule in the last 4 days, and no messages were there informing me that the chars were about to expire b) nowhere does it say you must play these chars for 2 hours every 2 months. When you first create an account, it tells you to play the char for 2 hours within the first 48, but that is it.

    - Receive reply from Blizz informing me that the chars have expired, and there is nothing they cn now do. They inform me that the chars have not enetered bnet in the past 2 months, and that is how the chars expired.

    - Reply to Blizz telling them that they are talking out of there ***', and simply can not admit that there is a problem within the expiration system.

    - Receive a reply from Blizz telling me not to contact them about this issue again.

Let me know if you get anything back from them Vizier, would be VERY interested to hear what they have to say.

I already filled all this information in on their web submittal form, with a detailed explanation. No word yet from Blizz but I'll have patience for the rest of the week.

Something changed with those mysteriously expired characters though... I tried to log in as one and it didn't give me the "this char has expired.."" yada yada yada. like it did last night. Instead, it let me load the character, but gave me a "realm down" when I tried to take it into a game.. the ones that kick you out for 5 minutes base on your IP address.

Another oddity happened too. Those characters that I intentionally let expire long ago (but the counters were reset on them) were actually loadable now into a game! That should NOT be possible. Maybe expired characters can be resussitated at some point in the future?? Fat chance, but seeing this other glitch, who knows.

Oh, and my alternating trick worked.. I've loaded all my 300+ mules into games - it took three hours though. I used to take each mule and have them kill something in the game before exiting, but this time I just rearranged an item or two in their inventories and exited. Hopefully that forces the game to see something changed for whatever it's worth.
