Chance to Cast build?

Chance to Cast build?

Inspired by another thread, I’ve been musing over a build which would equip only chance to cast items. Has this been attempted before? I couldn’t dig up any posts on the topic.

What I envision is a Zeal Paladin with Conviction aura to maximize elemental damage by the proc spells. The build is a little like a Riftadin, but with his other equipment chosen solely for its procs. Although he carries a shield, he would have base dex to keep those “cast when struck†spells coming. For lack of a better name, I’m calling him the Proctor for now. (Proctologist was also considered, but rejected! )

I tried to select ideal endgame equipment for the Proctor. My criteria were:
  1. High level spells (for actual damage and not just visuals)
  2. High chance to cast (for maximum fun)
  3. Offensive spells preferred (since it is a novelty build)
Here’s what I’ve come up with:
Code:
Helm Delirium RW 1% Chance To Cast Level 50 Delirium When Struck
6% Chance To Cast Level 14 Mind Blast When Struck
14% Chance To Cast Level 13 Terror When Struck
11% Chance To Cast Level 18 Confuse On Striking
Amulet The Rising Sun 2% Chance To Cast Level 13-19 Meteor When Struck
Ring1 Carrion Wind 10% Chance To Cast Level 10 Poison Nova When Struck
8% Chance To Cast Level 13 Twister On Striking
Ring2 Wisp Projector 10% Chance To Cast Level 16 Lightning On Striking
Belt Snowclash 5% Chance To Cast Level 7-20 Blizzard When Struck
Armor Dragon RW 20% Chance to Cast Level 18 Venom When Struck
12% Chance To Cast Level 15 Hydra On Striking
Gloves Hellmouth 4% Chance To Cast Level 12 Firestorm On Striking
2% Chance To Cast Level 4 Meteor On Striking
Weapon Rift RW 20% Chance To Cast Level 16 Tornado On Striking
16% Chance To Cast Level 21 Frozen Orb On Attack
Shield Phoenix RW 100% Chance To Cast level 40 Blaze When You Level-up
40% Chance To Cast Level 22 Firestorm On Striking
Boots Infernostride 5% Chance To Cast Level 8 Blaze When Struck
Sockets Rainbow facets 100% various effects on levelup
Charms Hellfire torch 25% Chance To Cast level 10 Firestorm On Striking

Merc Destruction RW 3% Chance To Cast Level 12 Volcano On Striking
polearm 5% Chance To Cast Level 23 Molten Boulder On Striking
100% Chance To Cast level 45 Meteor When You Die
15% Chance To Cast Level 22 Nova On Attack
That’s a total of 18 proc spells, not counting the merc. Every successful attack has an 82% chance of launching at least one spell, and a 16% chance even if you miss! Every hit by a monster has a 49% of triggering a spell in response. It’s be like a fireworks display around the player!

Any other suggestions on good ctc gear? Better names? It’s doubtful I would get to build one myself, since I don’t have access to much of the equipment or runewords. Still I would like to hear from some other creative forumites.

Conviction pallys are great fun and can be quite powerful (I plan on making one soon). You can still build one even if you don't have all the gear that you listed, just look for more affordable options or don't go quite so crazy on the ctc stuff. Realistically, you can substitute the following and still keep the theme:

Shield - Tiamat's Rebuke
Armor - Treachery
Weapon - Voice of Reason
Merc's Weapon - Crescent Moon
Even though Hellsmouth has more procs, you could use Lavamouth's which would be much more effective for your character and still fit with the build
You can also use nice rare rings and ammy's with CTC when struck mods

One more thing, there is no Torch in SP.

Whoa, that is quite a freaky build and would be fun to watch. I've never even heard of some of those RWs. The only change I'd make (personal preference) is to use some nice rare ctc Frost Nova boots, because if you're running around using Blaze, you're not triggering your other more powerful spells. Plus, I don't see Frost Nova in your list of gear, so it could be another variety in the firework show.

Those are all good midgame/cheap alternatives. I was just dreaming big.

I hadn't considered Treachery; that's a good suggestion. It's a shame Principle has such lousy mods - who would want level 5 Holy Bolt, even with 100% ctc?

Same with the Frost Nova boots. They'd also be cheap to gamble or craft using the hitpower recipes. Can the spell level get higher than 4?

Dreaming big isn't bad but simply not realistic. Build something doable now and then the big one in a few years when you have the gear.

Also, I would get rid of the Delirium helm, you can't zeal while you're a doll, that'll mess it up quite a bit.

Lastly, I get to show off mine. Fun to play, nice fireworks and reasonably effective.

yes, it goes all the way up to level5

I had a similar idea before starting my still-in-progress bowbarbromancer, but never followed through with the ctc-based build. However, during the "rolling the idea around my head" stage I also looked at items with charges, which is where I eventually settled (specifically targeting necromancer skills from charges).

Good luck on this one, it sounds fun.

Interesting idea. I agree with what others have said re: boots and the Delirium helm. I also feel that i should point out that given that all of your "socketable" items would already have been socketed to make runewords, there's really no place for the rainbow facets. Not that it's such a loss. i've never been impressed with their CtC...

No, only level 3, with 5% ctc. Boots can also have ctc Charged Bolt and Nova (both up to level 5 with 14% ctc).

If u can afford to make that for a novelty build, you are god :D

GL gettin the torch aswell  .

But seriously, sounds awseome, twink the gear a bit and u might have yourself a sick-arse char! If it works, i might make one (if you wouldnt mind?)

Thanks for all the comments! I realize that items like Destruction are unlikely, this was more of a Gedanken. Maybe someone on the bnet will have them, as well as the torch.

However it sounds so interesting that I probably will give this a try at some point. I have many of the lower level items scattered around my characters & stashes, as well as the runes to make Rift or at least Voice of Reason. (@jjscud - Delreich pointed me to your Patriarch ColdBlade thread. That's one reason I thought this build might actually work!)

If/when I do the build I'll stick with Hellmouth over Lava Gout, since it has more procs. Similarly I plan on using Delirium, although maybe I'll stick that on the merc and keep Naj's Circlet for myself. For a novelty build the theme matters more than optimization!

@ElMiko - I started thinking about this build based on a discussion of rainbow facets, so I thought they would play a role. I didn't notice that as the build evolved to use runewords they would occupy all the open sockets. Oops! :embarassed:

Dual dreams etc open up a lot of room on builds like this - High level CTC + + all skills items and auras etc = nice stuff
