Censor?

Will there be a language censor in Diablo 3? I got really annoyed when people in D2 would say **** this and **** that all the time.

But I don't want a super-strict censor. Playing Battle for Middle Earth multiplayer is a pain because so much of what you say is censored. I often dont use apostraphes and when playing BfME once I meant to say "He'll do..." but i said "Hell do..." The supid thing *** the word. :banghead: The system also blocks words like 'poo', '***', 'crap', and other small words.

Conclusion
If there is a language censor in D3, I want it to be very loose and only censor a few words.

What are your opinions?

It's hard to do language censorship. Albeit unfortunately necessary depending on the game rating. For mature audiences, the game could probably go without language censorship or allow players to turn it on or off.

What I find quite curious is that I never saw a game (or other piece of software that I recall) that allowed users to describe their own set of censored words.

I do agree however that language censorship does tend to overdo it. Sometimes completely ignoring even cultural differences. I've once been on a forum that censored words such as "hell" or "damn".

Another slightly annoying issue I have with language censorship (well, not so much the mechanism but the people using it) is the fact it can't avoid word alteration. I find the f word offensive regardless of how many asterisks one puts in front of it. It's as if users do not get it that if some forum or game interface is forcing language censorship it is because this type of language is not tolerated. Period. For some reason it's is assumed, if one alters the word, it's ok. When it clearly is not. The meaning is still well evident.

I see your point. Though it would be cool to see a feature that would automatically aserisk a list of predefind words you typed in. If you don't mind the language then you don't have to type anything in. If they did something like this no one would have a reason to alter there own words because they don't know the individual words everyone else has censored.

Note: I just realised one of the words i typed in my first post was censored. it had to do with race or a religion. Which i find rather funny since censors usually don't block buddhist, hindu or mormon.

I'm vastly more offended by typos or just sentences that are so badly mangled that they are not comprehensible by any stretch of the imagination.
So when there's a game that "fixes" horrible sentences, I'll chime in.

If you can spell the "f word" correctly but you get everything else wrong, there's just no hope.

toggleable filter covering basic swearwords with option to customise sensor seems ideal. Forced filter would just lead to everyone bypassing anyway and reduce the filter's effectiveness for those who want it.

Blizz have taken some flak for certain words they've sensored on their forums in the past.

It won't happen, but they should put in the slightly more creative censors that some forums have, like replacing profanities with "Oh my, the teakettle is boiling over!" or something game-related. I can't think of the other ones I've seen.

Mostly irrelevant, because they mentioned they were working on VoiP for Battle.net 2.0 (src?). So you'll either end up seeing them, or hearing them, and yes you will probably be able to mute players, but you could also squelch players in previous games.

Obviously wordfilters will be used for some things like character names to prevent "[blackman][expletive][drugreference][expletive]" from joining your game, but if I'm hanging out with my friends and want to drop F-bombs for lulz or whatever it is some people do, then I don't want the filter wrecking my precious swearing.

I agree. A customizable censor would be great.

I get so tired of hearing kiddie noobs drop f-bombs everywhere. Even more repugnant is the nasty racist people you meet on youtube, spewing their tripe about blacks and jews (or in general anyone that isn't them).

It wouldn't be hard to do. Just another menu in the Options screen.

Someone on here had a great idea of having a filter that replaced all instances of "n00b" with "Your Grace."

Does it really matter that much if you see "**** you" or "f*ck you"? You're going to interpret it exactly the same regardless. Hell, you might spend more time trying to figure out exactly what swear they used in the context.

You might have an argument here if your 10 year old is playing the game and it was a different genre, but it isn't. I've always found people getting caught up on this triviality to be pretty silly.

In Wow there is a language censor but you can take it off.. Tbh sometimes it could be better to have it on. I wish there was some kind of filter in battlenet where you could add own words.. Things like "FKIN NOOB" would be something nice to be ignored

well i dont mind the f word censored... but so many people are raised around swears it shouldnt bother anyone really plus its quicker.... what would you more rather type?

There are way to many of them we are definitly dead... or we are fed? alot shorter and more time to run

If you want to run, don't type (and walk so you don't have 0 def). If you can type "we're F'ed", you could also spam more FOrbs (example) and not die.

I would imagine a system similar to that in WoW would be in motion. Of course, the game is meant for older players but there may be those out there who wish not to hear vulgar language. So of course, a toggle on/off feature would be implemented. Though personally, I do not care about vulgar language, to me any word is fair game since it's part of the human language, and no one should have to use a word that doesn't exactly describe how they feel.

For example:

Your account gets deleted, after you spent 2 years working on it.
You'll feel more inclined to yell out "****".
Forcing yourself to say "crap" isn't going to cut it.

However, there are some words that should never be spoken, and they are racial or derogatory words.

Does anyone else find voice communicating over a game somewhat creepy and strange?

As for a censor, I don't think there should be one, and if there is, it should be able to be turned on or off at the players choice.

However, knowing Blizzard and Diablo I would be very surprised if there was one.

I haven't read all of the replies so sorry if this has been said.

Words like Hell and Damn won' tbe censored at all because both of those words will probably show up in the in game story text.

But the f-bomb and various words for penis, vagina, and poop can be censored and I would be fine with that... That's not to say I don't use those words its just the fact that you don't know who you'll be playing with and could possibly offend/annoy some one.

But at any rate, I would say the best course of action would be to have a language filter option in the menu... because when it all gets boiled down to the basics - There are people that want to drop f-bombs and There are people that don't want to hear f-bombs.
