Can someone who knows sports explain this to me?

So, a judge just ruled that an NCAA ban on lawyers is illegal.

Why was it illegal in the first place? It's a contract worth a lot of money. I'd want a lawyer there to say, "Gee, this part of the clause means you need to have sex with George Steinbrenner" or something equally horrifying.

I don't know the details, but it appears related to the ban on agents. The theory is that if you have an agent, you are no longer a student. Its all part of the myth that college athletes are students, not pro athletes. IE, its legal to give them "scholarships" and "internships" and lower requirements to get them into school/graduate but not legal to give them a salary or free things. But its pretty clearly bull**** to not let them have lawyers, or agents imo.

Let's end the farce of college sports -- either make them real students with no scholarships, lowered entrance requirements, and so on or else make them paid athletes as they deserve. Either would work, but this middle ground is a joke.

Perhaps their payment should be they all get to go to college for free

Like the legal system was ever going to rule against that :D
What I love is this opens the door for everyone that signed a contract under such conditions in the statue of limitations range to contest it and try and get a better deal if they want.
