Re: Busier towns
I think what this thread is trying to say is, we want bigger towns with MORE people who are actively moving around. Let's take Act 2 as an example: we have a few townsfolk who walk in a radius of maybe 10 ft maximum. There are others dotted around who sort of vaguely saunter about, but there is nothing to suggest that this is a bustling port city at all. Besides the limited NPCs, there are hardly any houses for a start. The most ridiculous thing in Lut Gholein has to be the palace. Ok, so maybe Lut is a very small town, but why does it have to have a socking great palace? I would expect a building of that size and caliber from a TOWN, not a hamlet! I don't mind so much NPCs who stand at their shops, but how about having townsfolk who stop at those shops to buy something? How about having a square with children playing, and some old guy busking. Make it feel like a real, lively town. When dusk approaches, each person could have a script which takes them off to a specific location, like inside their houses, or maybe to go stargazing on a nearby hill. Things like this would make the game feel much more immersive.
Kurast was more realistic, because it was HUGE [three whole maps of buildings] with a large temple-city [Travincal] at the end. The only thing that didn't make much sense was the way that the dock was miles away from the city's entrance.
The worst act by far was act 4, with the obligatory Cain following you, but other than that, THREE other NPCs, one of whom gives a quest and has dialogue, and two almost pointless characters who didn't say anything whatsoever and were only there to provide the player with means to buy potions and repair equipment.
Act 5 was actually pretty good. Of course, it had the standard NPCs, but it had some life too, with a barb even roasting a rabbit on a spit. It was great how you could come across the other barbs and help them out when fighting in the field. However, it does still suffer somewhat from staticness and just not enough life.
I hope they'll iron this out in D3.
I haven't played Guild Wars, and my experience of WoW is limited, but from what I have seen, in WoW, there are a bunch of NPCs who just stand there in the same spot and don't move much. Some of them give you quests and some of them don't, but they are all quite static [aside from the town guards who wander along a path].I guess but i dont want the game to become like Guild Wars and World of Warcraft.
