Built in Clock

Re: Built in Clock

How about a sundial in every town?

Or a old fashioned Sand Hourglass you can store in your stash?

You click on them to bring up a clock interface which will function as real life time keeper and will be immersive into the world. yes?

That would be freaking awesome. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of a clock until you posted this. That would work :scratchchin:

It would work just like an alarm clock, the sundial/hourglass is for graphical purposes and immersiveness.

Re: Built in Clock

Would definitely work for me. Being that it involves game content however, it may meet resistance from some players. In any case I like it.

I don't know about single player but you can type /time in any Blizzard game on b.net and get the time.

Re: Built in Clock

I think Blizzard is sick enough to want us to spend infinite time in their game so we get hit with more of their ads. And in the time we are not playing, they want us to be at the store buying their stuff.

So maybe they will never put in a clock that's too easy to access.

Poker machine lounges here in Australia deliberately have all visual access to the outside removed so players can't tell what time of day it is and will thus spend more time spending their cash. Its incredibly unlikely if Blizzard would put an clock in the game for exactly the same reasons, it counters profits. So get your modding tools ready if you serious expect to have a clock in the game. It a great idea though.

Wow you've hit the nail on the head! It could be an item like the horadric cube that every player can get if he wants to. Heck it could even be a reward to a quest 'The Horadric Hourglass', the boss could have time based powers similiar to the wiz... ok now i'm just rambling. But great idea Ouroboros!

Personally I don't like the idea, because you've to go in your inventory and check out the said item, it's not much different than having a cell phone next to you. However I look forward to what reyoo have to say.

Re: Built in Clock

The point was you just use it once to set the alarm or timer and forget about it. You'll see the thing running in small type on some corner of the screen.

However I personally don't see the need to add game content for such a feature. Games that implement alarm clocks and timers usually do it with no fuzz and keep it simple. In any case, the idea of a sundial in town that I can interact with is appealing.

How about when you right click it it displays the digital/analogue clock under the skill/potion hotbar. And for those who don't want a constant reminder can just open their inventory and hover over the hourglass for the time.

Sounds better.

The sundial also appeals to me pure game wise.

However the major point is not what's cool to have in a game, because many of these if not all would be really cool, it's however how to implement such the OP gets his question answered satisfying.

This is stupid. You should reevaluate your life if you think you need this. You're supposed to look away from the monitor every once in a while to maintain your vision anyway, maybe you should put a clock anywhere in your room.

Precisely. Besides it is something that can be set at console level and only those willing to use it will see it running on some corner of the screen in small type. No idea why the resistance.
I know you're not talking specifically to me, but I'll answer anyway :D

I'm not resistant to the idea, I really don't care if they include it or not. I just have a couple problems with the idea, one micro and one macro.

On a small scale, I just question the necessity of it. It's not like clocks are extremely rare. Everything has a clock on it these days, and the idea that it's easier to have a clock constantly running in game rather than glancing over to look at a real clock seems nitpicky to me. What does it add, really?

For that matter, we could add any number of unnecessary addons. I want an mp3 player built into Diablo 3, so I don't have to use my stereo. I want the /pizza command that was in everquest because I don't want to take my eyes off the game to order food. All things that can be done just as easily (if not easier) outside of the game, yet we need to include them in it?

On a broader scale, I think this symbolizes a larger problem. If the point is to make you aware of how long you've been playing the game, looking away from the screen will benefit you. If you are unable to take a moment during a down time (which Diablo 2 had plenty of... towns, game creation, aftermath of a big battle, etc), to look away from the screen, I think it is indicative of a larger problem, and an ingame clock is not going to help you.

Re: Built in Clock

It's a good point Sicilian. But hence my insistence in speaking of an alarm clock on about every post, instead of just a timer.

I don't know about anyone else, but to me an immersive and addictive game usually ends up on repeated experiences of me looking up at my watch and gasping in surprise at how much time has passed already. "I should be on bed 3 hours ago. Is it already this time? Gosh. Shouldn't be playing this game so much." -- is one example.

So the problem is really that sometimes you do get immersed in the game and really miss time moving by. It doesn't matter the watch on your wrist or the clock on the wall. You just don't remember to look at them. And when you do, thinking half-an-hour as passed, you realize your perception is often wrong by a large margin. This is how our brains work and is observed on many other activities where we are requested to employ our concentration.

Many games throughout the times include an alarm clock or a timer (an alarm clock is better) so this isn't anything new. The lack of such a feature just means that if it becomes a problem, I'll get myself some alarm clock on my computer because I find that more convenient than buying an alarm clock to put on my desk or setting my watch.

And that's really the operative word here; Convenience. It's just handier to have a game feature that allows me to set an alarm or a timer I can see on screen at all times. There's nothing else to it. If they implement it, so the better. If they don't, you bet I'll do it for them.

Re: Built in Clock

They could have a clock tower in towns and u could go and check the time. or they could have a person that u can go and ask "HEY BUDDY WHATS THE TIME"
or maybe one of those old school ways to tell time with the sun setting down and shadow thingy

but it really doesnt matter this is not mandatory to me.

Such a big debate over a clock :coffee:

Basically the /time command will also be in BNET 2.0, ok now thread closed.
