BSG, B5, Wing Commander - Freespace 2 Ever wanted to drift along at 90 degrees to your target and blast the frak out of a capital ship in a Viper? How about being right in the middle of a one of those missile barrages during a dogfight with a dozen Cylon Raiders? Or maybe you'd prefer to hunt Vipers in a Cylon Raider? Now you can. What about Star Furies? Ever wanted to blow the living crap out of a Shadow Battle Crab, or lead an attack against a Narn Heavy Cruiser or Centauri Battleship? Ever wondered what it would be like to be the fighter escort for a pair of Hyperions being *****-slapped by a Sharlin Cruiser? Now you can. You can do all of this, and more, for free thanks to the Freespace 2 Source Code Project. Beyond the Red Line is still in the Demo stage, but it has a large following and there are a number of single missions, campaigns and multiplayer scenarios available to give you the thrill of frakking toasters the way they deserve, all as add-ons to the official game (sadly, because it's only a demo, there's only 5 ships available as yet). This is a top quality game, as can be seen from the screenshots in this interview with one of the BtRL dev's. You can download BtRL, and scenarios, from the home page. If you're a fan of Battlestar Galactica this will not disappoint (although it may leave you craving more). Much more complete is the Babylon 5 TC - The Babylon Project. This comes with a full campaign against the Raiders as well as a demo campaign that is set during the Earth Minbari war (the first mission has you trying to defend two Hyperions against a Sharlin... you've been warned). Here you have a much more lively universe to blow crap up in with just about every ship seen in B5 present (including the Warlock and Victory (Excalibur) class ships) with many of them flyable - except the Whitestar. I'm yet to get past the first mission in the Earth-Minbari War demo campaign but have done 6-7 missions in the Raider campaign so far and I don't have any complaints other than I didn't figure out how to outfit my ship and wingmen until the most recent mission. If neither of these are your style maybe you'd prefer to play the Wing Commander Saga. I can't comment on this yet as I haven't played a Wing Commander game since number 1 and have yet to download this one, but it looks damned good. There's also quite a few other games, in varying states of completion, from simple demo missions to full blown campaigns that you can find out about here. Don't expect these to be like your normal game mods and don't expect any of them to just be simple Freespace 2 mods - the entire engine has been upgraded and everything I have seen so far looks spectacular and if TBP and BtRL are anything to go by the official games are very professional. In case you didn't bother reading the Wiki, these games are totally free. The makers of Freespace 2 released the source code in 2002 and it has since been completely revamped by the community. You do not need Freespace 2 to play these games, they are entirely stand-alone. So, go and jump in a Viper, Star Fury or whatever else takes your fancy, and get some wholesome space combat goodness onto your PC (or Mac, or *nix machine)!
