British doctors now want to ban kitchen knives, common sense

    Doctors' kitchen knives ban call

A&E doctors are calling for a ban on long pointed kitchen knives to reduce deaths from stabbing.
A team from West Middlesex University Hospital said violent crime is on the increase - and kitchen knives are used in as many as half of all stabbings.
They argued many assaults are committed impulsively, prompted by alcohol and drugs, and a kitchen knife often makes an all too available weapon.
The research is published in the British Medical Journal.
The researchers said there was no reason for long pointed knives to be publicly available at all.
They consulted 10 top chefs from around the UK, and found such knives have little practical value in the kitchen.

    Rest of story

First they banned guns. Now they want to ban knives. Make everybody with a kitchen a criminal. How long till this insanity is brought to the US?

Long pointed knives have no purpose? Please. I use large knives to cut *gasp!* large cuts of meat and large vegetables. You can't use a paring knife to debone a pig. You use a big pointy knife to do that.

What next? Ban pencils because you can stab down behind the clavical and puncture the aorta? Who do they think they are, the TSA?

I use a very large chef's knife to cut basically everything. People are going to kill each other, it doesn't matter how many dangerous objects you take away from them.

if the problem is impulsive stabbings while intoxicated wouldn't they first want to ban liquor or start lobotomizing people?

They banned Happy Hour in the UK recently, but if they to must choose between no knives or no liquor then knives lose. Spoons would lose too. ;)

Well, really the argument for banning things is based off of "this object makes crime easier." Anything can be a weapon, but people are trying to reduce crime by reducing the "easy-fix" tools. I think the problem is in the people who actually commit the crimes, not what they commit the crimes with.

If the intent is there, people will die. Taking away the weapons just causes people to become creative.

Prison for example, there are no weapons allowed. Granted there may be some, but the prisoners craft their own to make weapons in which they intend to kill.

Taking away a common instrument just creates need for another common instrument that people will find.

No metal sporks out there, really...i'd think i'd pick metal objects over plastic if i really intended to kill someone. I'd go plastic spork if it was just maiming and torturing people though.

I actually think its kind of a semi-good suggestion.

Not nececcarily to ban all pointy knives. That is an inherently ridiculous suggestion, but rather somehow make them less common in an ordinary household than today.

The pointy knives are after all a problem, not only due to excessive knife violence, but also in regards of accidental falling down carrying a knife or the accidental drop on my toe. I guess children might be less likely to hurt themselves on a non-pointy knife too.

Maybe one way to go is to make some kind of incensitive for the manufacturers of knives to make more non-pointy knives. Beats me what incensitive that would be though :)

No, you got it all wrong, guns don't kill people, naturaly made weapons of mass destruction kill people. In order of least to most deadly; giant tsunamis, big meteors, and big lava bombs.[/personwhowatchesdiscoverychanneltomuch]
