Bring your controversial topics, and Canadians.

I've just been assigned a persuasive speech for one of my communications classes, and I haven't a clue what to write about. I have to give it a week from Monday, so I have a bit of time to get it figured out. As I'm bad at brainstorming, I thought I'd enlist the collective intellect of the OTF.

I thought about comparing American vs. Canadian healthcare systems, I've heard you people up there have a decent system, wondering how it works. I live in the midwest, USA so, anything that might be region specific would work as well.

Any comments/ideas would be well received.

    Less Filling vs Great Taste.

And you can show the super bowl commercial as a visual.

Basically we pay our healthcare through taxes. Provincial and federal tax percentages on each dollar we spend and income taxes. Provincial governments divy up the tax dollars in the budget and allow for about 40% to go to healthcare in Ontario alone. The great thing about it is although you may wait along time in the ER someone is guaranteed to see you. We also don't allow for private clinics. They are actually illegal. This allows for equal rights for everyone. It's not a two tier system where only the rich get treatment and the poor don't.

Happy birthday if I haven't already said it somewhere else. :jig:

So, I get the impression that you approve of the system. I'm curious if there is anyone that has had experiences with both systems. It would be nice for comparison. Thanks for your input though, if I stick with this topic, I'll use you as one of my quoteable sources. We'll call it an interview

@Garbad Actually, if I thought I could turn this into a 6-7 minute speech, I might consider it. There are no restrictions on what the topic is, he mentioned having a past student explain why Blimpie is better than Subway.
Also, I don't know how well I could deliver the speech, as I'm only 20 and not much of a beer person anyway. But you have to admit, hauling in a couple cases, or better yet, rolling in a keg would be an awesome visual aid...

Keep em comin folks, I know you're a lot more creative than me.

In all seriousness, in a speech class the best topic is something distinct and funny. Not controversial. Those are bleh like the 12312341352456245122356233 other students' speeches.

Tampons versus pads would make for an amusing speech. I did that with some friends for a high school French class.

This is true. We only had to do 2 speeches this semester, the first was on ourselves, the second totally open. I'd prefer something that people will actually listen to and care about, don't really care if it's socially relevant or not. Really though, if I could come up with 6 minutes worth to say about that, I know most of the class could relate. But, as I said, can't speak from experience, so I doubt I could give a compelling performance. Still, a noteworthy topic, perhaps I can sell it to one of the bums in the back corner. They're all drunks.

@Steel_Avatar That'd be interesting, especially since the majority of the class (14/20) is female. Most of them are decent looking, and moderately intelligent, but I happen to be in the same class as my 3 year + girlfriend...so I have to behave. I'll put it on the list for further consideration.

    Ooh, ooh, controversial topics!

Take your pic: Pedophilia, necrophilia, murder (serial, situational), torture, sadism, masochism, animal cruelty, pyromania ...

Ie. by taking an ethical approach opposite to the popular ones. Ya know, like pro- instead of anti-, justifying instead of condemning, lots of fun and controversy there.

She just laughed. Apparently she disagreed with it being a viable topic.
    Nice thought though.

As inspired by Isolde, do a speech on why procrastination is good, and stand and don't say anything for the first two minutes.

You know, that's a great idea. I think it would go over very well in my class. I will deffinetly put that on the list.

Nah, that'd be too one sided. We all know WoW is the devil. Why do you think they separated out the forums? It's to save all us good D2 people from those poor lost souls. I should start up a WoW recovery clinic, save them from themselves and all.

Controversy at the highest levels of Congress

How about how partisan politics is ripping the USA apart? I'd love to see how Bush supporters respond to this one (or how Democratic supporters respond to this topic). I did a Government paper on this very topic back in high school and got a B...this was before Tom DeLay, John Kerry, and Terri Schiavo, mind you, so I had less to work with.

Something I was thinking about last night, and was reminded of this morning by Necrolestes' sig, was doing it on population control. Not necessarily teenagers, but writing the whole thing about how we're working towards eliminating our only major threat with our development in pharmaceuticals, and if we don't establish some sort of control we're going to over populate the planet in...then I'll have to figure out how long it would take. Seems different, and I think I could have some fun with it. What do you guys/girls think?

Why we should declare war on our northern neighbors:
    1) Beer!
    2) Isolde=free lapdances for conquering heroes
    3) their army consists of 20 mounties on horseback, they'd surrender in 10 seconds!

An interesting thing to bring up would be the problem of famine in third world countries. If we solve that problem, we'd be screwing ourselves over with overpopulation.
