BlizzCon - 40$ for internet stream?

Okay, sorry if this isn't the right place to discuss this, didn't find a more fitting place.

Anyway, I saw that Blizzard are cooperating with DirecTV to provide HD coverage of BlizzCon. Since it's locally impossible for me to watch it on TV, I would love to see it streamed from my PC. But regardless, whether you watch it streamed or on TV, you'll be paying 40$... now don't you think that's just way too much? Charging money for a high quality coverage is cool, but 40$?? That's almost 1/3 the price of the ticket itself. It shouldn't cost more than renting a movie from the video store... even 10$ would be fine. Oh, and not everybody give a damn about the WoW minipet... I wouldn't even bother to sell that thing.

Besides, I don't understand what would prevent anyone from 'streaming the stream' for free. Yeah, it's piracy, but you know... it happens with everything. It can also be uploaded as soon as the coverage is over by someone.... and if not, there are always videos from the panels, just like last BlizzCon.

So yeah... pay 40$ or wait maximum 2 days for free information. Tough one.

People pay $50 for a boxing match that lasts an indeterminate amount of time (sometimes less than 5 minutes...see Pacquiao vs. Hatton), the results of which would be known for free worldwide immediately after the fight. People pay the same amount for a WWE 'fight' which is just a poorly acted movie. And people steal cable and descramble satellite channels, too. Paying $40 for live HD coverage of a 2 day event doesn't sound that bad by comparison, really.

I'm thinking of taking off work to watch the stream, but I wonder how good it will be. And it'd suck if they don't focus on D3 enough with the stream.

@Wolfgang, I'm not familiar with boxing or WWE, but if you meant 50$ for a live show ticket (and not a TV package/stream)... of course it costs more if you're physically there >.> I don't believe there's a show on TV that lasts 5 minutes and costs 50$ to view.

P.S. Do you know how to steal cables? Would love it if you gave me a tip. Doing that kind of things is a lot more complicated than pirating movies/music/games... and it can actually get you to jail.

He didn't mean a live ticket. The prices for these events on Pay-per-view can range anywhere from $15-80. He's just saying that you shouldn't complain about the price because one might pay $50 to watch a boxing match on TV that ends in a 3 minute knock out. They just got jipped out of their money. While Blizzcon's live stream is 16 hours of coverage at the least. Thats $2.50 an hour guaranteed.

Technically pirating movies/music/games can get you thrown in the slammer too, just least likely. Hopefully the FBI doesn't bust in and confiscate your computer haha.

I bought the Foreman return champion fight.

that was the pimpest investment ever. I also have gotten 2 wrestling ones long long ago. That was with a group though.

40 bux.... It might be worth it vs asking 900000 questions and rotting in my chair for 4 days not getting answers.

might be. 20 bux definitely. 40 is a lil steep for me. hm.

@Neocorey, well fair, people who pay that much money to watch a wrestling match are plain stupid in my opinion (Sorry FreshMeat, but really, watch on YouTube or something)... and I can't really find another example for a pay-per-view event that costs as much. So if you put it like this, it makes Blizzard look like the familiar WWE scammers. Lets be more specific, would YOU pay 40$ for that? by yourself?

Oh, sorry. Where? The Blizzcon site says it is to be decided at a later date. I guess pointing me to the source would be more useful than just disagreeing seeing as I've apparently missed it.

pfff $40, what a rip-off. does it come with a 50% off coupon for one of their games? and if they charge the same for an internet stream that will cut out, freeze, skip etc., that is even a bigger rip-off.

I too wouldn't pay $40 US for the live coverage, simply because I wouldn't have much time to utilize most of it. Chances are there's going to be daily updates anyway on sites like IncGamers which will give me all the information I need, plus the ability to read it at my leisure. I also suspect the pricing may be controlled by DirectTV.
