[caption id="attachment_385559" align="alignright" width="350"][IMG] This was so much fun...[/caption]Blizzard granted some rare media access to the Diablo 3 developers, resulting in an article on IGN with some new infos about this and that. Or at least some restatements of existing info. The article covers Seasons and how they may come to the console, the new Season Journey, why they still don't think PvP would work in D3, Kanai's Cube, and some comments on the recent job opening for an Art Director for an unannounced Diablo project.

Check out the article for full details. Here's a quote, Blizzard on Console Seasons and PvP:

"The initial feeling was with consoles, because of the way it’s set up, it can’t support leaderboards and the online community isn’t the same - there’s a lot more playing with friends on a couch rather than in a general community - but it is something we recognise that a lot of players have given us the feedback in the last year," says Rob Foote, senior game producer. "Sometimes Seasons aren’t really about the leaderboard, but having a fresh start, experiencing the game again and feeling like you’re part of a larger community than yourself where the excitement around Diablo is there. So I think maybe that’s something we need to re-evaluate again. We’ll probably go back and revisit that decision."

..."The best part about Diablo is the PvE," [Wyatt Cheng] says. "I think we’ve really had a lot of focus on making sure that it’s the best it can be. When we try to incorporate PvP, when we made more effort on that, PvE suffered I think. There were a lot of ideas for Legendary ideas that simply would never have happened if we had to do PvP balancing as well. Now we did introduce PvP brawling and we invited players to go into the Arena, do it and try it, and I think what you find when you go into the brawling arena that the Legendary powers that are amazing and make you feel so awesome when you’re attacking monsters making PvP no fun at all."

The obviously solution to Battle Arena PvP is to offer it with pre-made characters who are already balanced, exactly as the wildly-popular PvP demo worked at Blizzcon 2010 and 2011. And yes, I've pitched this exactly idea directly to several of the devs over the years, and they always say that 1) they're not doing it since players want to play their own characters with their own gear in PvP, while 2) strongly denying that the lack of quality D3 PvP is due to the overlap it would create with Heroes of the Storm.

[caption id="attachment_385561" align="alignright" width="350"][IMG] Sigh...[/caption]Point 2 seems unlikely, but I'll take their word for it. As for point 1, they're correct. Yes, a lot of players would like to play their own characters in PvP... except that as Blizzard keeps saying, that would make balancing impossible. Which is why the option of choosing from a selection of pre-made chars is a lot better than another 3 years of nothing. It would also make PvP an accessible and fun minigame, avoiding the D2 situation where anyone who wanted to compete in PvP had to spend dozens or hundreds of hours to optimize their skills/gear for it. Imagine PvP deathmatches in D3 that were skill/tactics based? Rather than just another way to award victory to the players who have spent the most hours grinding gear/paragons. Unpossible!

The Diablo 3 Battle Arena from 2010 remains by far the most fun I've ever had playing any demo at any Blizzcon. Check out our DiabloWiki.net article on the Arena for all the archived infos, screens, and videos. Thanks to Neinball and Johnny for the news tip.

After 11 years, they finally cut the tether between PvE and PvP in WoW, after 11 years of fans frothing at the mouth about it. So I foresee they finally get their act together long after everyone has left and gone off to play something else. And yes, HotS is basically where you're "supposed" to play D3 PvP, even though it's technically SC2.

I know there's not many console players here, but someone has to cover it. Yay, console seasons! All we need is to keep our previous saves while starting fresh then merge them at the end of the season. That would be awesome if they could just do that. I do currently delete my stuff when I feel the need to season myself if you could call it that. It sucks saying goodbye to all those upgraded gems and nicely rolled gear and earned paragon levels but hey, the game is so much better starting from scratch it is worth it.

I have been an addicted Diablo player since the first edition...
I do have the console version, but after Blizzard stated that no patches or new content would be created for the PS3 version, I didn't bother buying RoS for it. The game is fun enough playing the vanilla version on the PS3 and playing the full version on the PC. Before the release of RoS I was really thrilled by the gameplay on the console and played it almost solely on that, but since RoS I only play it occasionally on the console...

If I want to start fresh on the PS3 I can use a different account on the console... The stash is only shared between players playing on the same account.

PVP could be with fixed gears (an average legendary without a special power) at all slots and just the choice of skills and Kanai cube affixes... It would be easier to balance...

Even Kanai would result in imbalance. Some of the affixes will be overpowered for some of the classes, while there is no equivelant alternative for other classes.

A good PvP game is designed as one from the beginning, like HotS.

With HotS being free-to-play, I think a PvP in Diablo 3 isn't needed anymore. If you still want a PvP in a Diablo-only universe, you should start a lobby to ask Blizzard to provide such a thing. But the majority of the people still playing Diablo 3 seem not to be interested in it right now.

And maybe one of the worn set bonus (like the meteor shower for Tal Rasha or the firing sentries for Marauder).

PvP indeed requires work to balance all the affixes. My point is just that balancing the affixes is lighter work than balancing the whole game (which implies creating a whole new game). HotS is fun but it is not the same game (obviously): Team play is the big part in HotS while it is not in a Diablo PvP game. Maybe someone can explain if the WoW PvP can allow teamless PvP?

Did anyone actually try building a PvP-centric build? I'd assume it would require huge amount of Toughness and CDR for movement and defensive skills, but maybe it could be doable. Without absolute endgame gear I remember having quite a good fun with one of the IncEU members (Xeodus maybe?) while I was in the clan as well. We both equipped the tankiest gear and passives on our Barbs and could have relatively long duels (meaning 15s+). I wonder if the same is possible with really good gear, defensive or offensive.

Nice ideas OP, Decoy and whoareyou. This thing CAN be implemented, and it's a shame it is left outside the game. Maybe it's about time...
Btw, I don't understand why I have to play a different game (HotS), in order to have some PvP. I want to play Diablo, nothing else from Blizzard. Esp. since we are talking about a free to play game, it doesn't make sense to me how it would draw players from that game into D3.
