    Blizzard hiring "Anti-Cheat Engineer"

    http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/careers/posting.html?id=110005K

That's some scary CV material but bodes well for D3 I think :)

Also interesting is that they mentioned the Warden by name. IIRC, the name "Warden" was discovered by crackers reverse engineering the binaries for WoW, and Blizzard only first officially used the name in public in the Glider court case.

They will need all the anti-cheat engineers they can get. If gold will be valuable in D3, as they want it to be, people will try to bot-farm it and sell it.

With all the game-crippling insanity that has been going on lately, it's good to see Blizzard taking action to protect their bread and butter.

What's funny and sad is that it will probably be some clown that perpetrates these types of things that gets the job. It's rather sickening to be honest.

Law enforcement agencies also use hackers to fight cybercrimes. I suppose its called "fight fire with fire"

Hopefully this is one step towards preventing hackers and bots.

Yeah, I know. I understand the reasoning behind it but it doesn't make me feel any better about it. It just empowers these people in my opinion. At any given time someone could go rogue and screw up alot of things. Then again there's nothing stopping legitimate IT people from doing the same. It's a lose lose situation in my opinion. Until the mind control chips are distributed to the public we should all be afraid. <Takes off tin foil hat> :D

Not all hackers are bad. They are commonly referred to as white hats.

Right so the only person who should look for holes etc in software security is the bad hackers who want to steal credit card info etc? If that the case then any bad guy with a 10th of a brain will of hacked every computer system in the world and taken everyone cash (hacked banks transferred cash around as they wish) credit details etc.

asymmetric encryption is kinda the band aid preventing this from happening.

    Re: Blizzard hiring "Anti-Cheat Engineer"

zrk it was aimed at The Lord of Darkness, just to point out if no one tried to crack/exploit the code before it released IE: test hack it, the software will have holes in it like Swiss cheese and large ones too. Also the first anyone would know of these holes is when the hacker got what the wanted and made trouble.

^ as for asymmetric encryption all the hacker has to do is hack the decoding program (and following one from my previous points there be a hole the hacker can go through that will let them see the decryption code and on top of this change it to what ever they wish).

I liked the last bit of the requirement plus, to be a L33T hacker. Its good that they are tackling this before they release the game tough. The harder they can make it the better.

    Re: Blizzard hiring "Anti-Cheat Engineer"

Well I got about half the requirements :(

Besides that, a hacker is someone that has the knowledge to break through or bypass security. (very short way of explaining) What that person does with the knowledge is another story...some use it to get a fun job, some use it make someone else's job quite annoying.

    Re: Blizzard hiring "Anti-Cheat Engineer"

Nonetheless, hiring ex-hackers to help beef up security isn't new. Hopefully Blizzard doing this means that we can have fun kicking evil butt in D3 without worrying too much about some no-life hacker making life miserable for us. :)

    Re: Blizzard hiring "Anti-Cheat Engineer"

Good news but Blizzard has a history of not supporting their old games and when D3 becomes old it will SURELY become overflood with cheaters just like D2.

Ehm, they don't support D2 much anymore, but they did for a long time, a longer time than most other companies would for a non subscription fee game.

    Re: Blizzard hiring "Anti-Cheat Engineer"

Seeing how Diablo 2 was not only badly built but also its 10+ years old, you can't expect games to be able to keep up with hacking software, its just unrealistic. Games will always become flooded hackers sooner or later, its just a matter of sooner, or later. Blizzard has always tried their best to make it a later.

    It's pretty fail in general.

Interesting that they tout ollydbg and not IDA or windbg, which are generally the tools considered to be used by professionals.

    Re: Blizzard hiring "Anti-Cheat Engineer"

Blizzard could request a Lulzsec attack on Battle.net to test their servers. Afterwards ask for reports on improvements on their weaknesses...

Than Blizzard has freely hired the best anti-cheat engineers around.

Someone beats Lulzsec, Lulzsec will only see it as a challange to do better by protecting Blizzard ;)
