Re: Blizzard Callout! Item Affixes & Modifier Brainstorm

Of the Beguiler - a hit turns the enemy to your side and they attack their former comrades, variations of it can wound an enemy but temporarily turns them for a set time; or completely heals them but turns them permanently. They will go on attacking your foe over time, and be beneficiaries of any heal or augmentation spells that you give friendly forces. Variations of it can affect (that is, turn) only certain monster or creature types (eg, Dead Beguiler, Demon Beguiler, Snake Beguiler; ie <whatever> Beguiler); while the best or most powerful can turn any enemy. Negative aspects of the weapon would be its inherently low damage points as its primary purpose is to turn enemies.

Came up with a few more... This is all I have for now, but I'm sure I will come up with more. Maybe some that don't directly affect stats in some way.

Health Globe Altering Affixes
  • Stalwart - % Chance that a Health Globe spawns as "Armor Globe", a globe that grants your character bonus to ARMOR BONUS for a certain amount of time.
  • Unyielding - % Chance that a Health Globe spawns as "Shield Globe", a globe that grants your character bonus to BLOCK AMOUNT for a certain amount of time.
  • Jagged - % Chance that a Health Globe spawns as "Jagged Globe", a globe that grants your character bonus to CRITICAL HIT CHANCE for a certain amount of time.
  • Acrobatic - % Chance that a Health Globe spawns as "Evasion Globe", a globe that grants your character bonus to DODGE CHANCE for a certain amount of time.
  • Vivacious - % Chance that a Health Globe spawns as "Vitality Globe", a globe that grants your character bonus to LIFE for a certain amount of time, healing the amount by which LIFE is increased.
  • Monstrous - % Chance that a Health Globe spawns as "Strength Globe", a globe that grants your character bonus to PHYSICAL DAMAGE for a certain amount of time.
  • Shrewd - % Chance that a Mana Globe spawns as "Warmth Globe", a globe that grants your character bonus to MANA REGENERATION for a certain amount of time
  • Sapient - % Chance that a Mana Globe spawns as "Wisdom Globe", a globe that grants your character bonus to SPELL DAMAGE for a certain amount of time.

That would be inpreferrable, esp with a big chance. Chugging potions is removed from D III, and making Healing Globes not heal anymore? o-o

Yeah, I expect a low % chance if such a thing shows up. If they replace too many health globes, it would be inoptimal to have such an affix, but if they spawn with a low rate, and have a fairly long timer on the bonus they give, they would be completely worth it and actually quite powerful affixes. Missing one heal every 10 or so monsters shouldn't break you, and if it makes you more powerful just in time to pick up another health globe or clear out the enemies faster, it'd be pretty great.

Chance to teleport on being struck
Chance to cast town portal on being struck
Chance to evade a successful strike
Chance to cut the enemies head off (vorpal effect) - make it not work on act bosses.
Chance to half enemies health on strike if over 75 percent health at the time (make it very low)

____ of the Grub : X% chance that X number of maggots creep out of your own corpse and proceed to do nothing

A unique breastplate made from the ribcage of a fallen warrior would be nifty, it producing an Aura of Fear weakening the damage/defense/speed/whatever of your enemies

Wow, Stillman, that's great! I particularly like Alchemist's, of the Compass and of Reason. I wonder how/if of the Compass would work with the checkpoint system.

About gloves: I don't know if this was posited or not, but what about special caster's gloves that restrict the use of weapons? They'd of course have big bonuses to caster skills and/or stats to make up for the loss of weapons and/or shields. It'd be neat to have glove-specific casting animations, too (the obvious "holds fireballs in his/her hands" comes to mind, but the possibilities are many).

You could conceivably have a set of items that can only be used in conjunction for their full effect. Imagine a vial of fluid/powder with which a mage would coat his hands or body prior to battle, and when thus coated his abilities were enhanced (the effects wear off after a set time, and the duration could also be effected by gear mods). These types of enhancements only work when wearing clothing of a specific mod or set of mods, though — you know, to keep it balanced (you don't want every char to have spiffy high-end weapons and spiffy damage-enhancing timer buffs).

Re: Blizzard Callout! Item Affixes & Modifier Brainstorm

call this modifier whatever you want, randomnimity or whatever

how about a mod that is different everytime you strike with your weapon, first hit it's poison damage, next hit it's crushing blow

here's another idea, crumbling (call it whatever)

does much more damage but lowers the stats of items you find

one more ! dazzle (call it whatever you want...)

causes chance to cast light (or shadow alternately) over you and your enemy making it hard to see eachother for a short time

good for stealth but instead of concealing you it conceals an area or you AND an enemy or something like that

Re: Blizzard Callout! Item Affixes & Modifier Brainstorm

I could foresee an amulet or helm or armor, called "Chameleon's ___" for lack of ingenuity, which holds a 25% resistance to whichever type of damage most recently hit you, be it nature, arcane, fire, physical, whatever.

The amulet's properties would change on the fly as soon as a new type of damage hits you, to lose protection from the previous type and gain protection from the impending danger.

Sure, the thing needs balance in terms of power, and is less useful in situations which assault you with multiple damage types. However, it could be a very useful supplement to other items.

In fact, the modifier could spawn in a variety of forms; perhaps another item could be "10% resistance to the last 3 types of damage received".

This suggestion might be here already, if so I guess its no big deal.

A modifier for equipment, preferably gloves, that allows you to grab items on the ground from a distance. It could have a numerical value that indicates how much reach it gives you, or it could just be a rare modifier that has a set distance. It could have a cool magical effect, making your character even cooler.

I just had a thought. I really like the skill where the Wizard can slow time. But maby there could be a skill rune that made the skill reverse - make time go faster. It could be kind of interesting if there were many ranged characters in a game and they all with help from this spell could shoot/ do their magic faster! But it has to affect both the players and monsters of course...

What do you think?

EDIT. Due to that people would use this rune to perform unwanted pvp, perhaps it's not the best idea ever... =)

Similar ideas may have already been posted by others. Hard to remember all the suggestions in 8 pages.

... of Faith - after striking oponent, sparkles of light linger around the oponent, increasing the chance to hit that oponent.
Shielding ... - after being hit on this armor or shield, there is a chance that a magical shield bubbel will engulf the wearer. This shield will absorb a percentage of your total health before failing.
... of Terror - chance to make oponent flee after striking.
... of Healing - chance to heal all nearby friendlies after striking an oponent. Amount healed can be a percentage of maximum health or damage dealt.
Wrathful ... - chance to shortly stun all nearby enemies after striking an oponent.
Avenging ... - chance to infict oponent with avenging, making the oponent take damage for each attack it will do for the next several seconds.
Blazing ... - chance to increase melee attack speed and do fire damage on the next several strikes.
Daunting ... - chance to lower oponents defensive abilities for the next several strikes.
Purifying ... - chance to set a slain oponent on fire, damaging nearby other oponents.
... of Warding - increases defensive abilities of nearby friendlies and reduces movement speed of adjacent oponents slightly.
Hallowed ... - chance to take half damage from ranged damaging spell.
Thunderous ... - chance to cast a chain lightning after striking an oponent with this melee weapon.
Indomitable ... - increases defensive abilities by 5% for every damage inflicted upon you. After stacking 10 times this prefix will not work for 30 seconds.
... of Glory - increases the chance for an oponent to drop an health globe if you do the killing blow.
Unbreakable ... - when you are struck you have a chance to become unbreakable, taking half damage from the next several attacks.
Interposing ... - chance to block or parry with shield or melee weapon is increased.
... of Desperation - after a friendly dies you gain increased attack speed and defensive abilities. Energy cost of spells and abilities will half. Last 10 seconds.
Enfeebling ... - oponent struck will do less damage with its next several attacks.
Martyr's ... - when there is 1 or more friendly nearby, you take 25% extra damage from area of affect spells and all nearby friendlies take 75% damage. Note, you don't take extra damage for each friendly, just once 25%.
Entangling ... - chance to root an oponent in place after you strike it, or it strikes you.
... of Renewing - Increases health and energy regeneration when not in combat.
... of the Revenant - after killing an oponent a nearby slain friendly is brought back to life for 20 seconds (perhaps not players, only henchman).
Disruptive ... - after striking an oponent, its next attack will miss. Prefix only appears on slow two-handed weapons.
... of Splintering - attacks will also deal a small amount of damage to nearby oponents.

Re: Blizzard Callout! Item Affixes & Modifier Brainstorm

I'm just going to spit out thoughts that don't really deal with "X% damage increase" or other mods so similar to the Diablo 2 affix selection

I noticed a suggestion that changed weapon effects depending on if it were night and day. Perhaps an affix that worked similar to this, but took weather into account.

for example, I noticed the wizard casting tornado spells. Say if it were raining in-game this tornado would do more damage, and if it were snowing it would do cold damage and in turn freeze targets occassionally.

For ranged weaponry, something similar to exploding arrows but on killing shots it would be equivalent to TNT strapped to an arrow and it could explode within the target stunning and knocking away nearby enemies, while making a bloody mess for eye candy.
On that same line of thought, something like the necromancers poison dagger, but for arrows. Along with poison damage it could spawn enemies within the target which spill out upon death, like broodlings from a queen in starcraft, or the eel-like things in the bloated zombies in the Diablo III demo clips.

Utilizing the environment is being emphasized in Diablo III, so affixes which encourage the use of one's surroundings might be valuable. Damage and range increase are always safe suggestions, but perhaps something more original would be fun. Maybe an item that makes map booby traps light up for easier finding, or a sound is made when you will surely hit a zombie with that chandelier (considering I saw quite a few misses in demo footage).

A chance to disarm monsters with melee weapons might be interesting. What comes to mind for me is a Moonlord in act 5 of D2 losing control of his axes and having to punch instead. Or even disarming with a ranged weapon, however unlikely it is, could be neat. The fact that you can knock shields out of enemies' hands had me think of this.

Re: Blizzard Callout! Item Affixes & Modifier Brainstorm

I don't know if it has been mentioned yet but here are some of my ideas.
This is somewhat pretty crazy ideas but I hope Blizzard will read them :)

of Lycantrophy - 0.1% chance after each kill that character transforms into werewolf (or wolf). If transformed into werewolf character gains +50% increased attack speed and great life regeneration. If transformed into wolf character gains 50% increased run/walk speed and 25% chance to inflict critical hit upon attacking. This ability happens only if it's full moon (14th or 15th day in a lunar month, but can be also considered as regular month for game purpose). The duration of transformation is 10 minutes.

of Demonology - 1% chance after each demon kill that character becomes possessed with the soul of slain demon. If possessed, character transforms into great winged pit demon that does +300% damage, +50% increased attack speed, hit points are increased 25% and all attacks do fire damage. The character also gains 100% magic find and 300% gold find chance and has the ability to teleport. However this powerful ability appears only during 6th hour of June the 6th each year (according to time zone where player plays if it's single player, and battle.net time if it's multiplayer). The transformation lasts until 7am or ends before if the player gets hit with a holy spell /dmg source.

of Joyfulness - 1% chance that each set/unique items that monster drops appears with double stats. Happens only on fridays and saturdays between 8 pm and 10 pm local time or bnet time if it's multiplayer.

That's all for now, if I come up with more "unique" ideas I'll write them up.

Re: Blizzard Callout! Item Affixes & Modifier Brainstorm

Upon Hit X% chance to decrease enemy attack speed for Y seconds with next attack, where X is equal to percentage of Enemy health lost as result of Hit.

Upon Hit % chance to Decrease Enemy Movement Speed by X% for Y seconds
where Y is Equal to 1/Z of player's Dexterity.

%chance to add self destruct counter to Equipped Player. X number of counters causes Player to Explode Damaging all enemies within Y range.Damage equal to remaining life Multiplied by Z.

Same as above but with an AOE Healing or Elemental Damage ability, but instead of killing Character it would add a temporary (X seconds) Total Mana Penalty/Debuff. Damage or Healing would be equal to remaining Mana.

Hit Decreases X% enemy Mana and Replenishes X% Player Health.

Upon Taking Damage if Equipped Player's % of remaining Health is Less than Half of % of Remaining Mana then Player Loses All Mana and gains in health = to the amount of lost mana.

Upon gaining health Equipped Player has an X% chance to gain Y% more health. (Can be used for Mana as well)

% chance upon Equipped Player losing Mana Player Gains +X to defense for Y seconds, where X is equal to the amount of Mana being lost.

Same as Above except +X to movement speed for Y seconds, where X is equal to the amount of Health being lost.

% chance upon critical hit Equipped Player gains +X to Attack Speed for Y seconds.

Upon Losing Health Equipped Player has % chance to gain +X seconds on all currently applied temporary Buffs.

Upon Successful Block equipped player loses X% health and Gains +Y Weapon Damage for Z seconds, where Z is equal to 1/4 of total Health lost.

% chance Upon Hit all Elemental Resistances are equal to X for Y seconds where X is Equal to a randomly assigned value.

Upon taking damage % chance that Gold drops will be increased by X% for Y seconds, where X is equal to remaining health.

Re: Blizzard Callout! Item Affixes & Modifier Brainstorm

I like the idea of a random effect being picked from a pool of effects in which, some are beneficial to your character and some are not.

Prefix -
Lucky: increased chance to get a positive effect with any equipped item.
Unlucky : increased chance to get a negative effect with any equipped item.

This would only apply to the items that have a pool, and would just make the items more or less risky, maybe negative effects could be used in your favor?

Re: Blizzard Callout! Item Affixes & Modifier Brainstorm

- % chance on hit to summon a baddie-thrashing demon covered in spikes and claws and teeth
- All healing effects are increased by X%
- All damage is increased by X%
- % chance on hit to cast some cataclysmic spell which obliterates swathes of baddies in gouts of flame and death
- health/fury/mana regeneration bonus
- damage shield based on a % of attack power
- increased attack/casting speed
- enemies killed with particular weapon or spell yield more xp/gold/loot
- increases pet/summoned allies stats
- gives aura which increases armor/damage/stats/skill level for you and allies

I'll edit the post when I think of more.

What a fun project.

Motivation - Each enemy killed boosts your magic find percentage by one point up to x-% amount, will reset to zero every 1-5 minutes.

Acrobatic - Every time an enemy misses you, you gain x points to your rage/mana bar.

Explosive - Spells cast have x - % chance of doing 4 times as much damage.

Can't wait for this game to come out.
