    blizz vs immunes

i was thinking of building a pure blizz sorc, but my concern is with cold immunes. how much does maxing cold mastery and using facets effect the damage done to CI's? my mercs always seem to die, so i really want to be able to kill on my own. i will have pretty good gear to increase my cold damage if that is an issue.

thanks for any responses in advance

there's really nothing you can do if you are single tree and meet immunes to that tree, other than merc/static. melee or bow are the only other options.

seems like awhile back i saw a chart that showed how cold mastery effected the resists of monsters. wouldnt that mean if an ememys resist was brought down to 0, the damage would still connect?

nope. the way it works is that any immunity is a marker, and cold mastery won't remove that marker.

then what does cold mastery do? it doesnt boost damage like fire mastery does.

    it affects relative damage.

if you do 100 damage, and the monster has 75% resists, you actually do 25 damage. however, if you have -75% to resists, the monster now has 0% resist. so, now you do 100 damage. the increase is:

    (100-25)/25, or 300%.

If a monster is immune, that immunity cannot be broken by Cold Mastery. Meaning, NO damage from cold spells for cold immune monsters. That makes it a "marker" as Superhal explained.
With a Paladin and Cold Mastery its possible to break immunity also in some rare cases with a Necro and his Lower Resist combined with CM.

In a sense CM does indeed add to your damage compared to not using it. Since the resistances are lowered more damage gets through in the end oppose to not using CM or any other sorc of -xx% Fire/Lightning/Cold/Poison resistances.

If the resistances of a monster are 0% CM or those other sources will AMPLIFY the damage and your damage will grow by the added percentage!
A spell with any kind of -xx% resistance always wins compared to the spell without it.

There is also a cap that monster resistances cannot be lowered past -100% fire/lightning/cold/poison resistance.

ahhh thanks for clearing that up. so basically cold mastery works on all other monsters EXCEPT for cold immune. well maybe i should invest in a fireball or 2.

i appreciate all the quick responses to my n00bular questions.

Best you can do is level your merc, give him a good fast weapon, with lots of life leech, and some damage reduction.
When he is high enough, his resistanceses will be OK.
Then take the hard monsters apart and let him take them down 1 by 1.
Works for me, esp. in HC.
(reapers toll, or bonehew, with tal mask or gaze, and pref a shaft).

p.s. you can always party, with a fire sorc, a trapsin, a BO barb, a summoner necro, a druid and a hammerdin.
Evt with a pally for aura's, or maybe a boner.
    Man that party rocks!
