    Best Video Game Plots

I'm having a discussion with a friend right now about the best video game plots. We both agree that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for the Xbox had the best plot. I'm curious to hear what other games you guys think have great plots.

Final fantasy VII is my #1 favorite game, plot-wise.

Perhaps a not as well know title : But I liked the story behind Tales of Symphonia. When you thought it was over there was still more to do!

KOTOR had a pretty good story as well, too bad part 2 didn't.

I also like the stories of BG1 and 2 and NWN 1 and 2(+add on). Those are the only ones coming to mind.

I liked the fact that a lot of things in Tales of Symphonia were references to Norse mythology.

Tales Of symphonia was a great and very much underestimated game.
In this time of short 10+ hour games, it was a breath of fresh air giving you more then 40h of gameplay.
The game was actually great fun and was suited for more then just 1 run through. If you like RPGs and have a gamecube : go buy it. If you dont have a gamecube, go buy one to play this wonderfull game!

After I finish Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, I'll be getting Tales of Symphonia. I've read so many great things about it. And I want to be ready for the sequel, which is coming out for the Wii later this year.

    Re: Best Video Game Plots

There is a sequal coming up. That's great news: there hasn't been a single really good game for the Wii yet. (Thank god I didnt buy the Wii, but have a brother that did!).

Together with smash brothers (another month waiting!!) there will finally be some proper Wii games.

QFT, one of the greatest games I've ever played. The plot is the best of all games I've played, to stay on-topic.

Did that game have a plot?

I liked then plot in final fantasy tactics but it's a really complicated one that probably escapes the demographic.

I only play fun games, so it's quite possible that I have missed some of the ones with better plots.

Metal Gear Solid wins so far though.

Knights of the Old Republic was good, but I've always liked Planescape Torment's story the most.

    Re: Best Video Game Plots

Monkey Island was great for its originality, but it's not the best.
Half-Life 2 was great for its immersive qualities, but it's not the best.
BioShock had one of the most thought-provoking storylines I've experienced, but it's probably not the best.

I liked Morrowind's storyline (or, more significantly, storyLINES) the most. Aside from the Main Quest, which developed at a perfect pace and with total realism (and was kick-butt-awesome to boot (no pun intended)), there were storylines to be told about the disappearance of the Dwarves, an ancient race whose only remains are the ruins of their strongholds, as well as inter-guild rivalries, etc.

I'm not going to spoil any details for those who haven't played it. What I WILL say is that if you haven't, and you can swallow a slightly-graphically-outdated game, please play it in its entirety. I got 300+ hours out of just following storylines in that game, and an extra 100 hours from doing miscellaneous quests.

    Re: Best Video Game Plots

QFMFT. While some people did not enjoy the strict predestined role, that was the whole beauty of it as far as I am concerned. I also liked how Planescape, that in general is very over-the-top and munchkin environment, was well bound into the story.

This is the other end of the spectrum, albeit no less successful. The world in it, and later Oblivion, felt pretty hollow and suffered from suspension of disbelief at times due to some playability quirks, but the plot was well made - it felt as if you, in fact, was exploring the world and finding out the plot as you went, not as if you were a mouse in a labyrinth with walls made of plot devices and deus ex machinas (I don't have a clue about proper declination, so I'm not even going to try; leaving that to Dondrei). The feeling, while not present in TES III and IV, is not at all uncommon among CRPGs, and makes at least me want to do this.

    Re: Best Video Game Plots

Tales Of Symphonia made me feel physically ill from playing it. The fighting and combat was fun enough, but the dialogue and story were horrible. It was almost as bad as Custom-Robo.

Most games I play aren't too plot heavy. Starcraft has a good story going for it. I need to finish playing the Monkey Island games, those ones are fun... hell all of those lucas arts adventure games are fun, not much story but good humor.

Yeah, it's a pretty easy win for Planescape: Torment. But there are other worthy entries, MGS and KOTOR are well deserved (KOTOR 2 was also pretty darn good, albeit a little rushed at the end).

    Don't forget Wing Commander 3.

whole MGS series has awesome plot line, as someone already mentioned.
Another game series that has very interesting plot is the Hitman series for example
