Actually it's not a question of being rich. Placing 20 points in skeleton mastery and 20 in Raise Skeleton makes you strong, so the role for my merc remains just to provide the crushing blow to the big bosses. Still, as I said, different people have different playing styles, so almost everyone will have a different "ideal" setup. The big damage stick proves fatal to the merc when you're running Chaos - the Oblivion Knights' Iron Maiden curse will prove fatal to the merc a number of times. That's just an annoyance though because all it takes is few piles of gold to resurrect him, plus your skeletons lose the Might aura till you resurrect him.Unless you are just so rich that your merc's damage doesn't matter, a big stick with lots of damage is always worth it. Unfortunately for him though, he doesn't play ladder, so infinity & obedience (big damage + massive crushing blow) are out.
I have two insight polearms - one in a voulge, and one in a collossus voulge. I use the low damage weapon when running Chaos, and the high damage weapon when running pits and Baal. All it takes is to find a friend online who can help me xfer the stuff from a mule.
