Depends where and how you want to play really.

Does highest possible skills equate best gear for summoner? Or does most durable & loaded with magic find equate your idea of best gear for a summoner?

Personally, I use total junk gear and have negative resistances and low +skills so that I can run with a crap ton of MF (busting 600% right now). They're one of the few characters who can actually sacrifice durability of self for the unholy diminishing returns of >300% numbers while still being able to kill--since they're not doing it.

So.... what is it that you want to do with your summoner?

Cheers,

You can't lose free skill point. You get free skill points from these quests (on each difficulty for a total of twelve free skill points):
Act 1: quest 1 (1 skill point)
Act 2: quest 1 (1 skill point)
Act 4: quest 1 (2 skill points)

For Act 2, you may have forgotten to pick up the Book of Skill. In that case, just go kill him once more.

Generally, this is good Summoner equipment, no matter what you do:

Arm of King Leoric/"Heart of the Oak" runeword/"Beast" runeword/Carin Shard
"Enigma" runeword/Skin of the Vipermagi
Homunculus
Harlequin Crest
Trang-Oul's Claws/Magefist/Chance Guards
Marrowalk
Mara's Kaleidoscope

Any Necromancer Hellfire Torch
Gheed's Fortune

The cost for these items may vary a lot.

Take your Summoner's level and substract it by one. Add the amount of skill points you think you should have gotten from quests to this number.

Then, count the amount of skill points you really have now.

These two numbers should and probably will be equal.

Godly summoner equipment:
Weapon: Arm of King Leoric for summoning, then hoto/wizzy (resistances) or beast runeword (fanaticism) on switch
Shield: Boneflame for summoning, then Homunculus on switch
Helm: Undead Crown for summoning, then switch to Harlequni Crest ("shako")
Belt: Arachnid Mesh for summoning, then switch to life / resistance / mf belt
Rings: SoJ or BK rings (equally effective) for summoning, then switch to resistance rings if required.
Amulet: +3 summoning skills for summoning, then switch to resistance amulet
Gloves: Trang's gloves or Frostburns
Boots: Marrowwalks with +2 mastery for summoning, then switch to Waterwalks with high life.
N torch and annihilus with a lot of summoning gcs, needless to say.

If your primary purpose is magic finding rather than monster killing, consider placing magic find items on switch (Gull / Ali baba, Rhyme runeword shield, ptopazed shako, goldwrap, nagelrings, Amulet of Luck, etc)

Beast / AoKL (summon switch)
Umed Homonculus / Boneflame (summon switch)
Umed Shako
MP Enigma
Arach
Mara's
SoJ
mana/Life/@res ring
Inventory: Anni, Torch, 6 Summon skillers with life, 5 20 life scs, tp tome

This gets you [email protected] and you have to get the rest [email protected] from torch, anni and ring (plus you can put a couple [email protected] scs in inventory). slvl 47 skellies. Personally, I max GM and use Iron Golem from low damage Insight to take care of mana problems. This way you can squeeze in a 2nd SoJ. Alternatively, CG is good and you can use the GM points to get sth else, like Mages (hate them) or Bone Armor + Synergy.

Merc: Act2 Nightmare Offensive with Infinity, Bramble and Umed Andariel's

Overall you have fanaticism, might, conviction, thorns, insight. One of the best killing machines out there (competing with an elite light sorc in low player games).

Edit: Obviously max block and I forgot to mention that good glove choices are Trang's and Frostburn. Also, the moment you have IM cast on your swarm of skellies they are toast, so this build will not work well on WSK and CS (sadly, because summoner is my favorite char type). However, if you have the wealth (about 12 HR according to my rough estimate) go for it, it is infinitely more fun than anything else I've played ^^

One thing zerth... I'd prefer a +3 summon ammy over Mara's. It's just a personal thing, I like better summons than more expensive show-off bling. Screw the resists/stats, your own safety doesn't matter, it's all about your army. You're just the tactician, your army's the thing that's doing the killing.

Merc's helm needs to be Guillaume's Face, not Andariel's. Life Leech comes from your Life Tap curse. Just throw it up when you see his health drop, then swap back to Amp when he's at full health, ez done.

I like maxed resists, what can I say? Also why Guillames, Infinity has 40% cb... You'll miss +2 skills (enhances might aura), ll, 20 (35 even if you manage a 15ias/[email protected] jewel) ias (2nd bp for most elite polearms iirc) for not taking Andy's.

Of course there are many things that can be customized on this build taking into account rare coronets/ammys, but overall I think that the choices I layed out are 95% of how good it can get.

the short termed weapons and such confuse me i'm not that smart when it comes to rune words and what not i looked at a few d2 item sites these things are not really that expensive if i wanted to buy them haha

Enigma is rune word using high runes. You can make it in many different types of base chest armors. It gives you the teleport skill, good magic find, strength, etc. It's the end-game chest piece for necros.

The base build is 1 point in all curses, 20rs, 20sm, 1 point in all other summon tree skills, 20 ce. The rest of the points can either go to 1pt BoneArmor and rest to BA synergies or you can pump GM with the ultimate goal of a sturdy Insight Iron Golem. You can build up wealth using high MF/GF equipment and doing cows, pits and optionally WSK (more difficult). Trade and gamble.

Possible MF/GF equipment
Shako
Ali Baba (2xLem) (AoKL on switch to summon army)
Rhyme shield (Humunculus on switch)
Goldwrap
Wealth armor or Skullder's (personally I dig GF)
Chance guards
War Travellers or rare GF/MF boots
+skills ammy
2 x Nagelrings

The summoner is an extremely fun char. Amplify Damage, wait for the first corpse, Boom Boom Boom, gather loot.
