Re: Best moments in sports history?
Sure you could live a long time....but what would you do? **** life without fun.
I belive what most people call fun, is merely some kind of entertainment that is derived through our emotional states. I do not give much for fun, and though when I was younger I only lived to have fun, mostly by playing computer games, I do now live to accomplish goals I have to defeat my fears and create the world I want.
... I also prefer to have these animalic instincts and desires. As soon as we lose them, we are nothing but androids or homunculi.
I could not find out a definition of homunculi that made sense with what you wrote, but I would say that we are more like androids if we are slaves to our animalic instincts, than if we have a complete freedom to choose our own actions, after all, if one has no responsibilities then our only limit of our actions (that are physical possible) to our goals would actually be from our desires of instantanious satisfaction.
However if we only had our primitive instincts, then we'd be more of an android, since we would not control our actions, but only behave on what some random emotions would dictate us to do.
Sure our goals and actions are deep down determined by our emotions, like Stillman seems to value his parents rather high, but when comparing different emotions in a rational way every person should be able to determine actually what they want, and from then one, emotions should not be relevant until the goal has been achieved. If the comparision was made rational I do not think anyone would ever change their mind as well.
Why don't you play off MS against other popular things, like Christmas ?
The problem I have with Christmas is that it is often used as an excuse to be with those we love. I do not believe there should be an excuse for this. However if it is a situation that live up to the goal one have, while sports maybe don't then there shouldn't be a problem in it. The opposite could also be true of course, I am not trying to dictate what other wants.
My point is that your comparison is not constructive, as we don't have a choice like that anyway.
You never know if you never try. At least done all what we could do, we can live with that it was not our lack of courage that stopped us, but the lack of ability.

Besides, it might be the case that enjoying people by offering sports events does more good to society than a cure for MS.
That depends on your definition of what is good, I would say if we could cure all diseases it would be worth sacrificing all sports for, sport should never mean so much that it decide the temper of a person, since that is the same as giving away your free will to the ability of some sportsmen, who probably don't even care about you.
stillman:
You criticize others, yet you waste your time on this meaningless (sorry, everyone) forum when you could either be working on cures yourself or you could be earning additional money to support those that do work on cures for diseases. Hmm. :scratchchin:
I completely agree with this, often people who tend to preach for others are those who most of all needs help to achieve what they preach.
Otherwise if he actually made everyone on this forum go out and do research then he'd probably have done something good, yet I still believe to do something right, one needs to do it oneself.
