Best moments in sports history?

Just post some of your favorite moments in sports history. I dont have a really clear mind right now, but i can think of three. They can be emotional, a victory, whatever. Just greatest sports moments.

-Vladimir Konstantinov holding the Stanley cup in 1998.

After the Red Wings won in 1997, he nearly died in a car accident shortly after. He was in a coma for a long time, and to this day he has not fully recovered. The Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in 1998, and even though Konstantinov was not part of the Wings anymore (because of the injury, he could never play again), they got his name engraved on the Cup. Then after they won it, Konstantinov was wheeled on on his wheelchair onto the ice, and Yzerman, the captain handed him the Cup while his team mates pushed him around the ice. Such a touching moment.

-Game 5 (i think) of the 1997 NBA Finals.
Michael Jordan was suffering from a really terrible case of the flu, he barely slept the night before, and barely had enough energy to get out of the bed during the day. He got out of bed a few hours before tipoff, made his way to the game, and started off slow, and then put in 200% effort despite his illness, he finished the game leading his team in points, and as soon as the buzzer went off he raised his hands in the air and fell into Scottie Pippen's arms from exhaust. Even though he was extremely sick and fatigued, he put in his all and then some.

-Michael Jordan's buzzer beater/last shot in the 1998 NBA Finals.

Bulls were down by 2 points against the Jazz, and the Bulls needed one more win. Michael Jordan already announced that it will be his last season (again). At the Jazz are just running out the clock, Jordan steals the ball and makes it across the court, with less than 10 seconds left he shoots the 3 pointer to put the Bulls ahead by 1, then the Jazz cannot come up with anything in the last 6 seconds (or however long). Jordan's last shot as a Chicago Bull, and an incredible ending to the Finals.

Name some more.

Kirk Gibson's walk off home run.

Kerri Strug nailing that vault on a broken leg (much as I am loathe to admit this).

USA defeating USSR in ice hockey back in the 80s.

Kirby Puckett making an amazing catch against the wall, then hitting the game winning home run in Game 6 of the 1991 World Series to force a Game 7. And yes, Kirby Puckett is my favorite baseball player ever.

Other than the Kirby Pucket one those were all on my list, as for others (they don't make MY list if I did not see them) the 96 and 2008 Olympic USA Womans Soccer victorys. Nadia Comaneci as the First Gymnast to Achieve Perfect 10, Tiger Woods Becoming the Youngest and First Black Masters Champ in History, Bjorn Borg beating John McEnroe at Wimbledon in a Marathon 4 hour Final Match.

That Kirk Gibson Home run/walk off still gives me chills to this day just thinking about it.

Re: Best moments in sports history?

considering I own a Konstantinov jersey, I'm gonna go along with you on the first one, even if I prefer to remember Vladdy upending people (*cough*Claude Lemieux*cough*) with hip checks

also

1988 world series Kirk Gibson homerun

Cal Ripken homering in games 2130 and 2131

Hideo Nomo throwing a no-hitter in Colorado pre-humidifier was damn impressive and remains the only no-hitter I've seen live in its entirety, and Nomo-mania was pretty fun in general and alot of japanese ball players have come to america and succeeded since

the first game back in the Superdome after Katrina was pretty amazing, particularly for a long time Saints fan (I own an Aaron Brooks jersey and am not afraid to admit it!)

I remember watching Paul Kariya get knocked out by Scott Stevens and scoring the game winner a few minutes later in the Stanley Cup Finals, before he ****ed the ducks over and skipped town

ohhh here's a good one, this was a rarity for me, now, alot of people can say they were at a game where Wayne Gretzky scored a goal, but I was at a game where Gretzky got a 10min misconduct penalty, I bet only 15,000 people in the whole world can attest to that, well, more like 11,000 the Kings sucked and didnt sell a whole lot of tickets, but that was a unique experience I think

Here's a random one:

Cory Sarich absolutely destroying Patrick Marleau during a playoff game last year. The Flames were in Calgary and down 3-0 in the FIRST PERIOD. Sariuch obliterates Marleau along the boards on a completely legal hit and the Sharks actually got a man sent to the box for trying to fight afterwards. The Flames went on to score on that power play and then win the game 4-3.

2007 Fiesta Bowl

Boise State v. Oklahoma

Best....game....ever

If that game had been in a movie, you would have thought it overly dramatic and unrealistic.

Oh yes, the Vladinator was beast at taking people out. Even though i was young, i still remember my parents following the Red Wings since i came to this country.

Respectfully disagree. It was a fun game and I enjoy watching it, but it was for the Who ****ing Cares About It bowl. Oklahoma already had two losses on the season and wasn't a great team. There wasn't the drama present as there is in other, better sporting events.

Re: Best moments in sports history?

oklahoma was a turd, they havent won a bcs bowl in a jillion years, who gives a crap if they got beat, they just keep on losing and I'm sick of seeing them in high profile games at all

I'd say their game against USC was more entertaining anyways, illustrating how big a gap there is between OU and a real program

I guess that was a less respectful disagreement than croup's

The best moment in Sports history hasn't happend yet. It will be when all of humanity abolishes sports and people stop channeling money into watching people fight and compete like primitives in arenas. When all this wasted money gets invested into medical research, people will finally be able to say "I gave up my sport of choice and in return, my mother/father does not have Multiple Sclerosis. I chose cures over my primitive blood lust."

It's not the "primitives" who have the most arena fights, but the most civilized nations and that has a reason. Primitives get their spears and bows and raid the neighbour village if their hormones tell them to do so while "civilized" people try to compensate these desires by watching football or whatever. I personally prefer the latter and I also prefer to have these animalic instincts and desires. As soon as we lose them, we are nothing but androids or homunculi.

Why don't you play off MS against other popular things, like Christmas ? I would prefer to live withour Christmas than without football. I don't know if your parents really have MS and I don't mean it as an offense. My point is that your comparison is not constructive, as we don't have a choice like that anyway. Besides, it might be the case that enjoying people by offering sports events does more good to society than a cure for MS.

By the definition of the word 'history'; yes, it has.

You criticize others, yet you waste your time on this meaningless (sorry, everyone) forum when you could either be working on cures yourself or you could be earning additional money to support those that do work on cures for diseases. Hmm. :scratchchin:

Re: Best moments in sports history?

Its a form of entertainment. Same with movies, games, or music. Instead of artists/designers/producers blowing tons of money on making these forms of entertainment, they could invest in medical research.
