Best Duelling Partner for a Mage?

Best Duelling Partner for a Mage?

I mostly duel and practice with a trusted group of inside friends, so issues of rules and GM/BM are not applicable, but I've decided that I may want to frequent pubs, where there may be times where a friend is all I have, and where there are no pre-determined GM/BM guidelines. This is also on ladder, where there is lesser access to top-end gear, so I won;t expect full inventories of 3/20/20s and 20/5s.

I personally play a mage. I usually start with 75fcr and rotate to 125fcr when necessary. Damage depends on setup, but I do more than 11/5. For a BVC, a bone necro would be an obvious choice, but for a Mage? I was thinking, and kinda narrowed it down to a few choices:

1) Trapsin or Trap variant: Nothing wrong this this choice. We can both go defensive or offensive together. Both can tank relatively well. A mage's conviction aids traps when going for foh, while mindblast and stunlock are fantastic aids for a mage against any opponent. Gives us a better chance against windies and barbs as well.

2) Bone necro: Bone necros are quite versatile, and deal qutie a bit of irresistable damage. Bone walls prevent desync (although prevents myself from desyncing too) and bone prison spells the end for anyone who cannot teleport. Like a trapsin, a boner gives an advantage against certain classes a mage may struggle with, like a pure hammerdin or a barb.

3) Windy: Huge life and great dual offensive potential. FoH stun allows for easier tele-stomp for the druid, and a windy doesnt really have any unwinnable matches. This pair may struggle if there is a well geared and skilled BVC player.

Notable mentions:

BVC: Concentration helps with damage, while the barb gives huge life, defense and the ability to hang with any caster in the game, while classes which give bvcs trouble are often destroyed by hammer variants.

SS druid/smiter: Gives almost an autowin against certain classes like casters and zons. WIll struggle against other matchups.

In all, my ultimate aim is to be able to overcome a wide variety of matchups, even 2v6 matchups. My personal favourite would be the trapsin, but I would like to hear what the pvp fanatics have to say. Also, if any specific tweakings need to be done for the second char, do briefly let me know. I thank you all.

I am not to experienced with 2vall play as I don't really have any friends on D2 that pvp alot , but I'll give you my opinion anyways. Out of what you listed these are my two favorite combos.

Trapsin+Mage
This would indeed be a great combo. Mindblast stunlock would allow you to easily foh/hammer them to death. All the while your conviction aura would make the traps do alot more damage. The majority of pubs would not be prepared to stack enough res to nullify conviction. You were right about this combo, It would be extremly deadly.

Bonemancer+Mage
This one would be great. Like you stated bone necros bring alot of important utility skills into the picture. Decrep, bone prison/wall. Obviously you would pwn anyone who could not tele like you said. Bone necro has some nice sniping capabilities with bone spear which would come in handy if they negated your foh and where playing very defensive. This would ruin a BvC's day.

I think either would be great combos but I feel that the trapsin+mage mesh better with Conviction being a nice crossover skill.

I'd say a ghost or bvc. While ghosts are awesome incarnate nothing says wtfzor like a high level bo on a class that allready has a huge life pool. Also, a bvc+mage brings 3 types of damage (phys, light, magic) to the table so it's really hard to sorb or resist anything.

cold sor, 1 blizz kills easily unless they sacrafice gear for resist
Or you could just stay out of the Blizzards

It's really not horribly hard to evade Blizzards unless they auto-aim, and even then you can just teleport out the moment you see it. It takes about half a second for the first shard to actually come down.

I agree that a BVC + mage does give great life and 3 types of damage, but would that overwrite the coherent synergy between a trapsin variant and a mage?

Hmm, I doubt I would use a blizz sorc as a partner. Too fragile and a lack of any real cohesion.

If ur a mage I would say a god fissure and Mage pwn games. My opinion is

Fissue+Mage
ww barb+Mage
Hdin+Mage

me and a random god fissure druid cleared many games.I used my Lite sorc.

a good 75block ss es blizz sor is no where near fragile, the point of this team is that no one can resist your damage easily unless they make some huge sacrafices. you can tele stop people with blizz/iceblast hammer/foh mostly 1 hit kills in pubs and thats what it matters

Sorry, I didnt mean that a sorc is fragile perse, but rather that a sorc is difficult to push into offense, and that I prefer a trap variant as I feel that the essense of a trap variant fits me better.

I would team with a druid or a barb if I ever had 2 people pubbing with me. I reckon those two would give a lot of survivability and different damage sources to make the team more viable against different builds.

It makes sure your light res is also -xx :)
Yes, but how would -light res benefit the Blizz Sorc?

We all realize that the Mage benefits from it's own aura, but the two members of the team should mutually benefit though. The Mage doesn't really get anything by having the Blizz there, and the sorc already has the opponent at -100 cold resistance anyways.
