Battlenet Question -- Game expiration

Yesterday I started a game on Battlenet as I wandered about the Flayer Jungle looking for the right Spider Den. I was joined by several others, and after liberating some body part or other we went to track down the next part of Khalim's widely dispersed anatomy in the nearby sewers.

As we progressed through the sewers, out of nowhere (to my noobish understanding) came a message at the bottom of the screen in yellow print saying "This game will end in 60 seconds". The timer then ticked down, and sure enough at 0 seconds (logically enough) I was cast back out onto the main battlenet screen. I started a new game, no problem. But my frantic efforts in the waning seconds of the game were unrewarded since nobody had found the brain (squishy sound) and the Quest remained on my screen.

This entire game lasted about 30 minutes, give or take 30 minutes. You know how time passes when you are busily dodging enraged flayers.

Is there a time limit on the games? Is this a bug? Did I do something to trigger the ending? Could I have done something to prevent it, like drinking a Potion of Game Prolonging? I searched the forum on "expired" and could find nothing about this. It was not lag or a connect problem, the timer was clearly visible the whole time.

Thank you in advance for your response.

If I remember right the realm shuts down once a day and you get this timer, it may be less often than that even but I think its just so that they can reset memory on the servers or somthing.

not sure in the exp though, maybe someone beat up baal? (and u didnt' realise this other char was doing his own thing while ur group was in act iii)

Both of those answers make sense. I suppose someone could have killed Baal, there were players in and out of the game on a fairly continuous basis. Having never actually done this myself, I didn't realize a timer would start up on completion.

But I would think a game reset from the portal to the Real World is another possibility.

its just blizzard shutting down the server you are currently using for maintenance....nothing more....and it is not a daily occurance like someone mentioned

Killing Baal does not close the game, or bring up a countdown. Killing Diablo on classic still does, however.

Hey Orphan, that was a great heads up on the Tao of Poison you left me on another thread. Very high quality and entertaining article, thanks!

No problem, I learnt about the article when someone linked me to it awhile ago (I don't remember who...), when I made a mistake about how poison damage was calculated :D. Helped me.

The Tao has a huge error for 1.10, because it was made for 1.09. Ranged poison is the same as melee poison now, thanks to a bugfix.
Orphan might've said that already, but 3000 posts is getting really close now :p

Indeed. Now I just need to transfer some money to my PayPal account.

I helped Hakai out with the first three versions of ATMA, by providing a win98 test computer and giving out d2 facts. Thrugg helped out immensly with the drop calc.

Eh, I still have ATMA III dev with editing capabilities, as well as the officially released ATMA III. It's said kinda funny at the website, because I & II are still around and III isn't, because it was superceded by IV.

Congratulations on reaching 1,000 posts, that's quite a milestone as well. If I were to add the pre-crash posts to mine, I'd have about 5,300...

Just re-upload your avatar :)
