Three Years in Prison for Posting Hatespeak

The Courts The Internet

Vainglorious Coward writes
"In the UK, a man has been sentenced to three years in prison for posting inflammatory messages to a website. Pleading guilty to inciting racial hatred on a site dedicated to the memory of a murdered black teenager, the 30-year old accused stated that he was not racist, and had intended to stir up an argument on the website, but did not believe in what he had written. The defending lawyer described her client as 'isolated and living in a fantasy world, spending hours on his computer in his room where his persona could be as he made it, good or bad.'"
Sort of worrying. Your thoughts?

3 years for a racistic reply? That seems "slightly" exaggerated to me

Nomatter what replies he gave, one shouldn't be send to prison for something like that... At the very worst pay a hefty fine, or moral compensations orso

Especially you should know better, you live in a country where it is against the law to state that you doubt if there were 6 millions jews killed in the German deathcamps, you can get years in jail for that. Oprah said here on TV last week that it were 5 million, she can get a couple years for that under our Belgian law. The state of israel who put a statue in Auswitch to remember 2.5 million jews killed in the war is a revisionist state according to our Belgian laws.

The same goes for the anti racist laws here, you can get many years in jail for a stupid remark.

How can you be shocked when our own laws are worse?

Belgian law is so crap (the parts that I know of) that I'm not familiar with all the laws such as these, but it seems reasonable that our country would have such law...

I do know that making a public Hitler greet in Hasselt can get a €250 fine, but not jail time iirc (maybe on repeated times)

And with all these anti-racism laws, the Vlaams Belang still exists? I know the Vlaams Blok has been banned, but how come they've been able to survive these laws simply by changing names?

EDIT: while we have strange laws, I still get shocked when confronted with them everytime, I sometimes can't believe how drunk those people must have been when making certain laws...

Making a wrong post in an internet-topic gives you 3 years of jail.
Murdering someone and admitting it, gives you 10 years of jail, but after 1 year, you're back on the street...

The Vlaams Blok has not been banned, it was a non profit organisation that was sentenced by a court for racism because they made stickers that had a drawing on them of a Marrocan going home, it had the text "East West, home is best". To get this conviction the state had to change the racism laws 4 times and in the end a french speaking judge convicted a NPO of the only Flemish nationalist party there is.

So the name change wasnt neccesary according to the law, it was a political decision made by the Vlaams Blok wich was in my view a big mistake, because it implies guilt were frankly there isnt any.

See the socialist party has to prevent the instalation of an independant Flemish state by all means because that socialist party in a Flemish state will never be part of the goverment, they are to small for that. In the belgian state the "Flemish" socialist party will practically always be in the goverment because of the majority of the Walloon socialist party, thats what the hatred is all about.

EDIT: while we have strange laws, I still get shocked when confronted with them everytime, I sometimes can't believe how drunk those people must have been when making certain laws...
It wasnt alcohol they were high on, it was pure hatred against the Flemish. That combined with a healty dose of lies and marxism and stalinism that gave us these crap laws.

I think it's a little odd as an American, but different places have different rules I guess. What's more weird to me is this quote:

The defending lawyer described her client as 'isolated and living in a fantasy world, spending hours on his computer in his room where his persona could be as he made it, good or bad.'"
This idea that people can only be who they want to be if they're on a computer is catching on more and more. What differentiates this man's computer room from any other location on earth? Do people honestly believe that there exists any place or situation in the universe in which a given person's persona isn't exactly what they choose to make it?

it gets better

When he was arrested in September, officers also found 33 images of child pornography on his computer.
He was sentenced at Liverpool crown court to two years and eight months' in jail for the race hate crime and six months consecutively for the child pornography offences.
The court heard that Martin had also created an internet profile using Anthony's name and photograph, and that he also posed as a schoolgirl on teenage chatrooms.
you guys better straighten out and fly right

That's what FBI agents do, only the difference is that if you talk to an FBI agent who's doing that, they'll actually come to your house, slam you up against the wall, and fondle your genitals under the pretense of looking for weapons (I'm not kidding. The FBI has special training courses to instruct their agents both on how to act like a teenage girl on the internet and how to properly fondle a man's genitals during a search). Then you have to spend the rest of your life going door to door telling people you're a sex offender even though you never touched a single person.

I think we're getting a little overboard about fetish enforcement. So the guy had kiddie porn. It's not like he was making it. Whatever happened to using the small fish to catch the big fish? Did Miami Vice teach us nothing? You know the guy's breaking the law, so you use that as leverage to get him to cooperate, then you trace the supply back to the source. Or do we just want to keep the internet flooded with kiddie porn? Forget chasing the guy who runs a server full of naked kids getting statutorily raped, let's get this guy with 30 pictures of naked kids! Go google "kiddie porn" and you'll have about 200,000 arrests you could make all lined up and easily identifiable for any law enforcement officer in the world, all of which would make more sense than busting this guy, douchebag though he may be.

QFT.

The same goes for drugs. Throwing people in prison for marijuana use would be laughable if it wasn't so cruel and stupid.

Drugs is a totally different thing.

And for all the talk of letting the little fish go to nab the big fish, we never get our hands on any big fish. Most of them are in hiding or overseas anyway. So it looks more like we're letting all the fish go.

Nice to see you again, Eli. The forum was starting to seem too sane and rational.

HAMC, when it comes time to fight, remember to shoot the politicians (on both sides) first. Good luck to you, it's coming soon
Is that "soon" the same as in Jesus' "I'm coming soon"? That is, over 2,000 years and counting?

Since the words were addressed to HAMC regarding the escalation of the internal conflicts of Belgium, I'm confident ECI's soon will be before Jesus' soon. I'm not sure if it takes any less than it has taken ol' saviour to come back, though. I wouldn't count on it.

Besides, when Jesus said "soon", it made sense in the cosmic sense, we're talking a god here. I'm pretty confident ECI does not aim to move on this scale, even if he might thing a bit large of himself.
